Ok, I'm not mad at the world, but I did make a Voodoo doll costume and stuck pins through my heart.

I, uh, borrowed the idea from a fellow craftster, I thought it was such a fab idea!  I didn't have any money to spend on supplies, so I made the dress from fabric I bought a few years ago on sale at a custom drapery shop.  The belt, tights, and shoes were all thingos I had already.

I teased my hair into two pigtails and painted big Xs on my eyes with a marker...It took forever to clean it off!!  I had traces of black around my eyes for a couple of days.

I had so much fun!  We hopped around to about five different bars and parties, and even dressed up the next day in the same costumes and went to a Dia de los Muertos party.  Oh, and here's my husby and I, he was dressed as "your mom"...heehee!!

I can tell you, Fall is composed of

1 part dead fish smell
1 part wet leaves
1 part arctic chilled air (not winter chilled variety)
2 parts crunchy walking
a pinch very cold rain
some apples you picked yourself
a few very still moments
a good deal of inner reflection

I like this, I am curious how did you get the 'pins' to stay sticking out like that?

thanks guys! Grin

like so!

I twisted the wire at the base into a spiral, so it would sit flat against my chest.  I pinched a hole only in the red heart, so the pins were sitting between the heart and the dress layers.  Then I sewed them into place (only on the underneath layer, so you couldn't see stitching on the heart) for extra stability.  One of them wasn't cooperating very well and had come loose and fallen out after a couple of hours o dancing.  But apart from naughty one, they sat quite well and didn't jiggle all that much!

Incase you decide to pull out the costume again - olive oil is a great makeup remover. Just close your eyes tight and rub in a few drops, then wipe off with a warm washcloth/cotton bud. It works with waterproof mascara, eyeliner, all sorts! Oils are great cleansers - I had nice red stains on my forehead from fake blood and a bit of baby oil (was at a friend's house so all she had) got it right off when soap and makeup removing wipes couldn't, so I'm sure it'd do its best at getting off marker

Did you use a pattern for the dress? If so, can we know which?

Ashleyjustine, everyone loved his costume!!  He's 6'2" so he really stood out.  And he stayed in character the whole night, talking like those old ladies on Monty Python!  It was grand... Grin  He wore my mom's dress and my grandma's sweater and purse.

Thanks for the tips, ratface!  I'll have to try olive oil next time...

mikehunt, I made up my own pattern.  Didn't think I'd be able to find exactly what I was looking for.  And I was on an intensely tight budget, everything I used was already in my uber messy stash.

What gauge wire is this?

=D I am *not* about to rip off your costume (yes I am)

Well, I shouldn't, considering how long it took me to come up with my deer idea...

but i will.

Huzzahhh, mento bug!!  Thanks for the uber fab idea!  I was struggling with three different costume ideas and this one seemed the most do-able in the short amount of time I left for myself.  I wish I could've used burlap like you did, I thought that was one of the best parts, but I didn't have any and, frankly, I hate lining dresses!  heehee...So thank you for your inspiration!!

And about wearing the same costume in different years, I made a bjork swan dress costume three years ago, and I've managed to wear it at least once these last three years!  This year I wore it to my fave karaoke night at my fave bar, the Ravari Room, and I sang the only bjork song they have on the list.  It was so much fun!

(shameless costume show-off)

Kingfrancebald, I used wire hangers so I have no idea what gauge the wire is...very stiff though, which was best I feel, so the wire doesn't sag as you walk around.  I wanna see your deer costume!!
