Every year, we have a themed Halloween party. This years theme was "Children's Media," and I made this costume of the Dread Pirate Roberts from The Princess Bride for my friend and bro, Val.

I used the Butterick pattern 4486 (making history men's shirts, view B) but I modified the sleeves. Upon re-watching the movie for inspiration, I realized the sleeves were some-kinda-embroidered.  After research on the internet, I decided that the embroidery was a honeycomb stitch smocking, black on black.  So I learned how to do it for this project. Smocking is embroidery across pleats - you generally only see it on fancy or old-fashioned baby clothes. It was really fun, actually. (But only in direct sunlight, I'm never doing black on black embroidery again!) The belt and the bandanna are pieces of fabric I cut and hemmed without a pattern, but we did buy the mask.

and a close up

The shirt is wrinkly, but how many pirates iron?
And of course, The Dread Pirate Roberts takes no survivors!

I almost forgot, the most piratey buttons ever!

Thanks for looking!

Wow, you did a fabulous job on that shirt!  I would run away screaming at the thought of all that smocking - black on black - on sleeves!  Hooray for you for being bright AND brave!

Great costume and the sleeves are awesome.  I am sure it took a long time to do that.  Honeycomb stitch smocking, not sure if I would have done such a good of a job as you did.  Wonderful pics of your work.  Thank you for sharing them.  It is nice to see a man outside of the garage.  Smiley

Wow!  You are dedicated to the costume cause!  I hope that shirt finds other uses, it's too good (and you worked to hard) for it to stay in the costume box forever.
