Me and my man were invited to a full on Halloween wedding this year, and I thought it was a great excuse to go all out on the costumes.
Recently I've been inspired by the whole steampunk thing.  It was so much fun to draw, I decided it might be equally fun to make.  I didn't want to do the typical fancy lady full skirt thing either.  I'm not quite sure what I am, but I think I'm some sort of air pirate.  Hence the aviator pin and the big knife.

It's a combination of things I had, things I bought, and things that were made.  the skirt, hat, pants and spats are all custom made.  The dreads a lovley ladey on Etsy made me a few halloweens ago.  A friend of mine with far more sewing skills than I helped me make the sewn parts.  Here's the original concept sketch.  yes, I sketched this FIRST. She's just that good at sewing.

I'm also quite pleased with how the aviator pins turned out.  I made one for both of us.  It's basically just watch parts, charms from Michael's, and lots of hot glue.

His costume was more thrift store and modifications.  We got his vest/shirt/pants at a thrift store, I made the belt/buckle harnesses, and I modified his hat with a new band, buckles, and a handmade set of goggles.  The jacket is from a Van  Helsing costume. His spats were also handmade.  Here's me and him at the wedding.  Sorry it's a bit dark.  We won the costume contest for most original costumes!

Here's a closeup of his gun, which is part of the cross holster he's wearing.  The gun I got at target and gave it a custom paint job, to make it look all coppery and dirty and steampunk-y.

I too have a bit of a thing for Steampunk lately.  Those costumes are truely awesome.  I wonder how a air-pirate and gentleman adventurer (that's my guess on your fellas persona based on the costume) got together in the first place.  Could be an interesting back story there.

Excellent that you guys won the contest!!

I'll try to post a pic of my and dh's costumes. If I'd been on the ball quickly enough, I'd have made spats for him...and I've had done a better job securing my skirt....it flopped around too much, methinks! (please forgive my poor posture, too!  Roll Eyes )

THANK you so much for the inspiration!!

Love, Marla

OMG!  How awesome!  I love em!  I think the skirt is especially cute. And belts.  Have to have lots of belts Smiley  And your dude looks strapping.  I love steampunk!  I'd run around like that all year if I could.

I think we should dress like that all the time (different boots for me, perhaps!). You should see that great little pistol he has. It is brass!! Very cool! He even got a brass eyeglass. I ruined his goggles trying to paint them, so I gave him mine. If I'm really ambitious, I may post the whole goggles re-do on instructables (and here, too, of course!). He'd have had a great hat like your guy, but I couldn't get him to shell out the $80. Gentlemansemporium was where we found the pants and suspenders (and the hat we didn't get). My mom was just tickled to death that my skirt matched his vest.

Your costume, and his costume are just...amazing!

So cool.

Just a question, though...(don't mind the ignorance.  Man, it's times like these that make me feel like I'm getting old...I'm only 25!)

Where exactly did Steampunk come from, and what exactly is it?  The only thing I can think of that looks like these costumes is kind of what they wore in the movie Stardust.

Hi!

Awesome costume!
making my own now inspired by your costume.
Can you give some tips on the skirt? and how you made it so 'ruffled'?
Thanx a lot!

The skirt is actually super simple.  It's just basically a tube that was gathered in a few key places with small straps.  That's it!
