I was poor this year (aren't we all it seems!) and wanted to make a costume for my toddler son that wouldn't cost me anything.  I did end up having to pay a few bucks for accessories and for the vinyl (a.k.a. my "faux leather") for the boot covers and the "belt".  I did not use a pattern.  Instead I made my own from clothing of his that fits him now.  I was inspired by a pirate costume online.  Here is the inspiration picture:

I decided on a pirate because I knew my son would know what it was and I already had everything for it in my scrap fabric pile!  Yeah!  Here are two pictures of the final product:

This costume is funny to me 'cause I kept saying please God, don't strike me down because the material for the shirt was made from an old Catholic priest robe.  I felt like I was being bad making a pirate shirt out of it!  LOL.  I guess I was okay cause I didn't steal it or anything!  Embarrassed
