I decided to dress as my favorite character from AMC's Mad Men, Joan Holloway, for halloween. I used a cheap "peggy sue" halloween wig and styled it myself, found a bunch of vintage accessories at the thrift store, and then sewed the dress myself from New Look 6643 in a nice lightweight red wool.

My favorite part is that I can definitely wear the dress again!

I ADORE this - you pulled her off perfectly!  I can't believe how much you look like her (gorgeous!).  Part of why I love watching Mad Men is for the style...

I love this!

I'm in such a Joan Holloway mood these days,  I think I'm gonna have a go at making a dress too!

It looks amazing.

Wow. You did such a good job that this is kind of creeping me out! Your facial expression in the picture is just exactly right. You did a really amazing job on the wig, too. I've only seen about 1.5 seasons of Mad Men (got behind Sad ) but I would have known who this was without a label.

There's a real skill to finding the right character to portray, I've learned. A lot of people just choose whoever they want to be most, rather than who they could plausibly look like. I don't know if you labored over this decision or not, but you utterly nailed it. I'm now going to hold you up as a good example when I'm in my next debate about character costuming!
