i neeeeed a sewing machine that has a ding or a light that comes on when the bobbin is empty. seriously, do you know how many times i have sewn at least half my seam before realizes the bobbin is out? it is the most annoying thing! does this feature actually exist? because it should!!!

thanks for listening Kiss

I hate that too. I feel foolish when I am carefully sewing along, trying to stay straight, watching the needle punch in and out, all seems fine and then when I finish...... whoops.... a long line of loose thread - ugh!!!  - Ya gotta laugh and hang in there. thanks for sharing

Worse is when that seam was a carefully eased, pinned, tricky, curved seam...and you had pulled all the pins out as they reached the needle. Argh.

It does exist, one of my machines has it and it's a godsend.  That and the needle up/down button  Grin

I have the same problem, often  Wink

I don't think there's anything you can do beyond checking your bobbin before starting the seam...

I stand corrected, what machine is this?

Sometimes you get to change the world, and other times the world changes you.

It's a Viking 1100.  It's not new either, it's probably about 15 years old.

*nod*  My mother had a machine that...did something when the bobbin was empty, though I don't remember what.  It was an older machine, but I don't remember the brand.  Singer, maybe?

oh, man, they don't make them like they used to do they? i hate refilling bobbins- i like to use them until they are absolutely empty- so even if i check before each seam i'm still going to run out, ha!

Oh Yeah THAT is a ROYAL pain! I have learned to listen to my machine, it sounds different when the bobbin is empty... But my machine is over 50 yrs old and is all metal. I cheat and use one of my other machines I have set up to wind bobbins that run out so I don't have to unthread the one I'm using... I guess I'm too cheap to buy one of those bobbin winder things....

On second thought, I guess I'm not cheap... I like to think of it as "thrifty" wink wink Wink

also bad: running out of bobbin in the middle of putting gathering stitches in a very full skirt.
(though breaking threads in the middle of pulling up said gathering stitches is even worse)

that happened to me a lot on an industrial machine at my old job, just zipping along and all of a sudden... crap!

we also had a domestic bernina there that did have an indicator for the bobbin being low but I was always so intent on whatever project I was stitching that I never noticed the thing flashing. d'oh!
