Fresh Apple Cider!

Some long-time and dear friends of mine are storing a 100-year-old cider press on their farm for a friend.  Every year they have several afternoons of cider pressing, doughnut making/eating and general enjoyment of the lovely fall days (and the crummy fall days).

Yeah, I got lucky with them for all kinds of reasons!  The thing with Bigfoot is that he's hard to really capture on film as he's all mysterious and mythological and shtuff.

I'm jealous, fall is my favorite time of year. I'm gonna have to go to the organic store tomorrow and spend way too much money on a teeny jar of cider.  I'll blame it on you.

Oh, YUM.  What a terrific way to spend an autumn afternoon with friends.  I've not seen a press like that in a long time - thanks, it brings back happy memories!

oh, i live very close to an orchard where we pick apples and can buy cider BUT they pasturize it, grr! i wonder if i can make a deal with them for some 'real' cider sometime. i'm gonna ask.

If someone tries to sell cider made the way we did they'd have to charge like $50/gallon to pay people minimum wage.  It is a long stretch of hard work, but good fun on a couple of autumn afternoons!

It is a really fun time and one of those odd occasions where it's very multi-generational and still very fun and satisfying.

Doesn't hurt to ask, that's for sure.  I know that there are places one can rent an apple press, not usually as big as the one in the picture, but still.  It would be a fun party if you could get enough people to create a big enough volume of cider to make it worth the trouble.

Indeed.  I've been working on some kind of warm cider cocktail and have only thought of it with whiskey and lemon.  Anyone have any?  My big issue with most hot cocktails is that they are SOOOOO sweet.

How fun - when I was a kid we had 3 big cider barrels in the basement, and every fall there would be a cider and doughnut night at the firehouse next door. Small town, good times!
