Craft or Die

My friend Lauren is getting married and they want me to make the cake. After a whole year (and with less than a month to go) she finally decided on some colors and a cake theme.

They want a Shrek themed cake. It can be a whole cake, cupcakes or a combination. It can be fun, fantasy or serious. Even if the cake is serious, the topper will be Shrek and Fiona. She wants onions on the cake so I think I will do some white chocolate truffles for those. I don't know if I want all the other characters or not, but for sure I'm going to do something with Donkey.

I think I will make the topper and Donkey out of polymer clay. If I decide on a castle then I need to get started making the bricks out of fondant like yesterday.

 Embarrassed  Huh

Suggestions, ideas, pictures?

Thats a HARD one! Why Shrek?

Hmmmm, how many people are you going to be serving? What is the style of the rest of the wedding?

I think there will be about 60. It's fairly informal. The bride is wearing a simple dress and the groom will be wearing a kilt.

would it be a tiered cake? that could give you some options...like a really tall castle...or if it was tiers on a stand then you could have different bits of Shrek for each tier, like the swamp at the bottom. good luck!

If you decide to make a castle, there's a much less time consuming way then building it brick by brick. They make brick wall patterns (like really shallow chocolate molds) that you can press onto a big slab of rolled fondant to make it look like a brick wall. Then just cover a big rectangle, and voila! Instant castle.

I've decided not to do a castle because I just don't want to deal with the construction of that nightmare. I am too stressed out for that.  Embarrassed

what if you made it shrek green, 3 tiered with shrek ears on the sides of the top layer. (like the "s" does in the title)  then you could put "onions" on the different layers for decoration.   you could have fiona and shrek as the cake topper as well.  maybe with donkey at the bottom (on the cake plate?) looking up at the couple, or even trying to cut in between fiona and shrek on the cake topper.
i cant wait to see what you finally come up with!

i don't know your cake making skill level but i think making the onion carriage that shrek and fiona ride in.

the closest examples i found were cinderella carriage cakes:

i watch ace of cakes on foodnetwork and they usually use a foam sphere half for the bottom as support, put the cake on top to make a sphere and cover the whole thing in fondant. so the whole thing won't be edible but is structurally sound.

whatever you do, i can't wait to see it. i would avoid making the cake too green or too brown..  Tongue

Thanks for the suggestions!  Shocked now I'm rethinking Donkey though. Her mom is psycho so she's always taking attention away from them. The donkey would represent me because I'm Teapot and she'd love that, but.... It could also be portrayed as her annoying, codependant, panic ridden, hypochondriac, stubborn mom.  Tongue  Embarrassed I really don't want that!!!

Also, I think I have decided on a green cake. I know it sounds awful, but I think if I do it right it might be okay.

I'm leaning towards a simple traditional looking cake with hints and surprises. Hmm..

Also, what would look good in Fiona's updo? I want something like flowers, but not flowers. Maybe something ogreish.  Cheesy
