I have this thing for birthday cakes.  I am determined to keep people guessing and make sure that the birthday boy or girl is thrilled beyond words.  A friend of mine (who is an exterminator) asked for a rat cake.  He wanted it red inside like the cake on Steel Magnolias.  I had been playing around with a way to make blood ooze out of a cake when you cut it open, perfect timing, huh?  Here is the result!

I made it with two Sara Lee Poundcakes because my air conditioning was broken and I was not about to turn the oven on.  The legs and head are Rice Krispie Treats that I smushed together and molded into shape.  The outside is covered in black frosting textured with the back of a fork, and all the pink is tinted fondant.  Inside, I made a well in the bottom layer and lined it with frosting to keep the blood (dyed corn syrup) from soaking into the cake.  I frosted the bottom of the top layer to keep the blood in it's place also.

I have tried this with regular cake, but it's too fragile to stand up to the blood.  Pound cakes work best.

If you would like to see a video of it being cut open, and get a better look at the inside, here's the YouTube link.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdjEy5X4uZk

I couldn't decide whether to say 'AHHH!!' or 'EWW!'.
Regardless, that is one awesome cake!
I immediately thought of Steel Magnolia's when I saw it.
