i wasn't sure what category to put this in, but i think it fits here, as it is similar to the felt bird pins i posted.

anyway, i'm going on a roadtrip w/ 2 of my best friends, we're flying from here (honolulu) to LA, then driving to austin, tx.
to celebrate/commemorate this trip, which i'm soooo exicted for, i made us all matching luggage tags:

(the 3 bird ones are for us, and the horseshoe one is for my sisiter who is going to vegas for spring break. the horseshoe one was inspired by something similar at urban outfitters).

front:

back:

i just cut out pieces of felt and stitched it together with beads, & sequins, using embroidery floss. easy as pie--though kinda time consuming, b/c i really didn't know what i was doing, and didn't really start w/ a plan.

the netting over the address part on the back (which might be hard to see since i blurred out my address) was a bit of an after thought, because when i finished it i realized that the cardstock i had in there could easily just fall out. I also sewed in  a snap, which you can't see, that holds the card in and keeps the tag from opening.

the only real problem is that they are really pretty and nice, and kinda fragile. i don't know if i really want to put them on my luggage that goes through who-knows-what once it leaves my hands. maybe we can put them on our carry-on's. hee.hee.

cowgirl,
sequins are easy, if you use a bead or charm to hold them in place (b/c of the hole in the center)
thats what i did, i ran the thread through the sequin, through a seed bead, then out through the bead, and back through the sequin. (if these seems confusing, i may have time later to draw a little picture).
i've also seem people use just sequins to do an entire picture, like a butterfly, out of only sequins, then you just arrange the sequins and sew over, under, etc.

i hope this enlarged picture helps.

sometimes the beads will stand on end othertimes, they lay flat--like in the picture.

These are so lovely!  The color combinations are great...and sequins & beads, to boot!  They look like something I would buy from a little artsy crafty boutique... very well put together, I am impressed Cheesy

Thanks again.
i actuall thought so too, sweets4ever, that they, "look like something I would buy from a little artsy crafty boutique."
my next step is too fingure out a way to make them more sturdy so that they'd actually hold up when going through baggage claim.

Great (crafting) minds, think alike!

Hmm... yes.. how to make the sturdy... baggage claims can be pretty rough!

You can use them as handbag charms instead, and replace the adress with some nice greatngs in case you loose your bag and someone else finds it...

Handbag charms wouldn't have to go throght as much beatings as a luggage tag...

Once I got this lovely red leather luggage tags, and they where really strapped tight on to the bag, and when I was to pick the bag up of the place i put it on the train, someone had unsrtrapped it from my bag...

barring theivery, to protect the lovely, lovely tags, i bet you could sew small clear vinyl pouches to just put around them...then, once this trip is done, you can take them out of the pouches and they are free to be out in the world again...

a.

actually when i did use it i just hung it from my caryy-on bag, figuring if i lost it or something, it'd have my name and stuff on it. plus, it looked really cute--especially when my friends had thier matching ones on thier carry-on bags! hee.hee.

That's a great idea!

I travel monthly to L.A. to visit my boyfriend, so I will have to make me a mermaid and pirate one for sure! Those probably could also be made while on the plane for something to do....the only thing that would probably not be allowed would be scissors.

I wouldn't put them on the luggage!! Hang em on your purse - very sweet, and decorative...
