I just got a pet hamster (shhhhh Im hiding it in my dorm)!!! And I wanna make it stuff. Any ideas outside of the typical boring cardboard tube things? I know it has to be safe if he eats it. No metal, paint would likely not be good either. Probably no strings or yarn I would imagine.

He isnt tame yet... so they cant be really too interactive just yet. He still tries to bite me.

he has what are called incisor teeth which means he must have wood to chew on to keep them trim (its not pretty if they grow out, and he would not be a happy hamster)

really hamsters are happy to chew all day (err... night as they are nocturnal), so give him cotton balls to make a bed in, and you could make him treats too. also, make sure to give him a variety of vegetables (1 fruit to every vegetable, dark leafy greens, not iceburg- too much water, causes wet tail) so he gets a proper diet, and especially since he is a new pet, let him alone a few days but watch for wet-tail, they get it from stress and it takes them out quickly.

also, make sure he has a wheel, he can run 5 miles a day- and he needs the exercise.

when i had a hamster i got one of those humungo storage boxes that are made to go under the bed, and made a little play place for him to play in- supervised tho because hamsters are houdinis at escaping (escaping, chewing and running are their past-times)

sorry... you probably know most of that, but i worked at PetSmart in the small animal department for 5 years and its crazy how many people DIDN't know the basics, so that was all stuff i habitually said...btw you can get a caresheet at petsmart.com
