Crazy for Collars

I bought the 1961 Annual supplement to the World Book Encyclopedia at a resale shop last Saturday for 70 cents--you know, just because it was there.  When I started thumbing through it, I came across these photos and just had to send them out to all of you.
Enjoy!

Oh my goodness.  One of my friends told me she had one of these when she was a little girl, but I couldn't quite picture what it would look like.  She said she loved it so much, they patched and patched and patched it until there was practically nothing left!  Thanks so much for posting this!

I want one so much! wow. Shocked  That would be pretty awesome for costumes too, they always look so sad when they fall half flat because of not enough petticoats.

yea but i bet you could make a sleve for it, you couldn't very well sew it to anything anyway. but i've been thinking, a bike tube is great for a little girl but what about us big girls? a bike tube maybe wouldn't cut it for circumference.

i thought about a tire tube as well but they are actually quite fragrant so i discarded the idea. if you could find a way to sew a casing out of something that would keep that awful rubbery smell from wafting out it could be just the thing. and of course bike tires come in a multitude of sizes so finding just the right one would be easy.

but you'd have to leave a space for the nozzle to stick out of. and you'd have to have a bike pump to inflate your skirt too. heh.

I used to make "tutus" out of pool innertubes that would just fit over my hips when I was swimming ... as a kid. Yes. As a kid. Not at all last summer.  Roll Eyes
But maybe someone could modify one of those to make it skinnier. Perhaps some kind of heat gun to bond the edges together?

That is so cool. My daughter has all kinds of dress up clothes. A couple have this annoying plastic hoop at the bottom, that always gets in my way when I'm, tring to put them away. This would be a neat alternative, but then I would forever and always be inflating/deflating her dress up clothes.

I know this is an old posting but I am from that generation.  One thing to consider on these was sitting down.  When you sit the skirt goes up.  Not good, lol!

totally cool.  If you really want the support and don't need it inflatable, how about using pipe insulation from the hardware store?  Use as many pieces as you need for circumference.  It would still flip up when you sit, like the scene in "The King and I"
