Remember my messenger bag in this post (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=254975.0)?  Although this is my most favourite bag style of all, I must admit it is really too big for my everyday use.  I finally found the time to draft a pattern for a smaller version and yesterday, sat down to make one.  Oh, what can I say?  I am totally smitten by the result!  I adore this bag and it's the perfect size for me!

Front

Zip top and front pockets

Back pocket (for my countless supermarket dockets!)

Inside view with my everyday essentials (hey, where did my mobile phone go?)

With strap fully extended

The finished size is 8" by 8".  I used up 3 coordinating fat quarters wisely for this one.  I promise to whip up instructions on how to cut the fat quarters shortly.  In the meantime, I would appreciate some feedback.  Thanks for looking and hope you love the bag as much as I do!   Kiss

OMGosh...I absolutely love this bag!  I love how you pieced everything together, but at first I thought the flap was pieced, too.  Is that just one fabric that looks like many?  And did you quilt the bag, because it looks it?  This is gorgeous and looks very professionally done!  Great work!!  Smiley

The messenger bag is one of my favorite styles too!  I love the pattern and the size, looks like it is just right.  I do have a question about the side gusset.  Do you have any tips on how to pin and sew this when you have to turn the corners at the bottom of the bag?  I usually avoid working with one piece gussets like this because I get so frustrated when I have to sew around it.  Yours look perfect.  Nice job on the zipper as well.  The pockets on front are a nice touch, great for keeping your keys handy.

This is adorable and looks so well done! It reminds me that I need a new messanger bag, as I use my Target one every day and it's just battered to no end. I'll be messaging you. Wink

Thank you for all the kind comments!  I appreciate them.  Smiley

Now, to answer some questions...

Do you have any tips on how to pin and sew this when you have to turn the corners at the bottom of the bag?
I also find sewing around curves tricky.  What I usually do is just pin heavily, making sure there are no folds along the curve, on both top and bottom fabrics.  When I get to the curve, I sew very slowly, easing out any small folds that may have formed.  I don't really know if there is a better way.  Huh

Where did you get the fabric for the front of the bag?

I got my fabrics from a discount store (Dimmey's) here in Melbourne.  It's not even a fabric shop...but they sell 8-pack fat quarters for only $5 AUD!

OMGosh...I absolutely love this bag!  I love how you pieced everything together, but at first I thought the flap was pieced, too.  Is that just one fabric that looks like many?  And did you quilt the bag, because it looks it?

The flap fabric is just one piece, printed to look like patchwork.  I am lucky to have found coordinating fabrics to go with it.  I did not quilt the bag.  It looks quilted, however, since I lined the outer bag with fusible fleece.

Wow - this is stunning.  I love the patchwork, love the choice of colours, and the design is so practical.  The zipped pocket inside and the pocket on the back are such great details.  Wonderful design.  I followed the link to your other bag and found the tutorial - yay!  Thanks so much  Smiley

Loving the bright colors on the bag for your daughter! That's really cute.  Is it felt-lined? I interfaced a bag with iron-on felt once and it's really my favorite for making a little bag hold it's shape/protect its insides Smiley
