I recently turned regular ole buttons to cover (actually they are fantastic and quite possibly the coolest things EVAR) into little layered flowers.  These are really easy to do and can be used in a variety of projects (cards, sewing, tags, on wrapped presents, etc..).

I keep getting tempted by those things but just never get around to buying supplies for them...

Umm, you've single-handedly swayed me to try them!! Cuz really, all those thumb-tacks and magnets really DO get boring after seeing them for the hundreth time. THIS on the other hand, is awesome!
