This is my first challenge entry, I hope you all approve!  Undecided

Back story: I'm kind of a political junkie and completely obsessed with this election. I decided my craft would be a bean mosaic in support of Barack Obama. If you don't like Senator Obama, please look past that and just appreciate / comment on the craft. Thanks!

Inspiration: I wanted to make a bean representation of the oh-so cool poster by Shepard Fairey. I'm sure you've seen it around. If not, here is the artist's official website: http://obeygiant.com/post/obama

According to my 1966 Better Homes and Gardens guide to Stitchery and Crafts: “Seeds, glue, and imagination are all you need to do seed mosaics”. They forgot to mention patience and a ridiculous amount of time.

Store Supplies:
about 2 pounds Black Beans
about 2 pounds Red Beans
about 2 pounds Pink Beans (too bad there were no baby blue beans)
about 1 pound Lentils
about 1 pound Navy Beans, Navy Beans, NAVY BEANS

Total: I spent a little less than $11 at WinCo (If you don't know WinCo, they sell low cost groceries and the bulk bins are crazy cheap)

Home Supplies:
Cheap old frame missing glass (I knew there was a reason I couldn't throw it away)
Bottle of Elmer's Multi-Purpose Glue
Krylon Crystal Clear Coat

Day One: Slow Going
I was so excited to start, but after 5 hours of laying out my design and gluing beans, I've only gone this far:

I'm ready to cry/quit

Days Two and Three: It's coming together
Watched some old movies and glued beans like a mad woman.

I'm very pleased with the tie.

Days Four - Huh?: Taking an artistic break
I was concerned about filling in the facial details... so I put it off as long as possible. At this point I kind of took a break, occasionally gluing a bean here and there.

Day Yesterday: Craftster now accepting submissions!
I had to finish this thing! But I still put off the eyes because they were going to be hard

Day Today: It is finished!

Just in time for the VP Debate!

Details:

Picture measures 16”x20”

Function: To get out the vote, inspire discussion, and act as my Obama poster since they were a limited edition run and I couldn't get one.

I ended up buying way too many beans, and actually only needed about a half pound of each type. I think I'll make bean soup out of the extra 6 pounds of beans. It's going to be a long winter.

While the mosaic is far from perfect, I'm very pleased with how it came out. If I had to do it again I would not use the lentils, as I had the hardest time keeping them propped up. The other beans were much easier to use.

Thanks for looking. I hope you all enjoy and don't forget to vote! (for this challenge and on election day!)

This is great! I saw an amazing exhibition by an artist called Vik Muniz a few years ago. He makes art (and reproduces old masters' work) using dust, spices, food, even hershey's syrup. this reminds me of his work. I really like it, great job!
