So there are two reasons why I found it so difficult to find any type of outfit for cats.

One: Most cats don't need the extra insulation, and will feign death or go on a rampage when you try to put the outfit on, resulting in blood loss.
Two: You get permanently branded as the "creepy cat lady"

Well, luckily, I don't fit in either. My mom has had a Sphynx (hairless) cat for about 6 months, and now that it's getting cooler, has remembered how bone-chilling cold my stepdad keeps the house (to save money).

Worried as she is about her kitty, we found a few XS dog patterns (McCalls M5544). The XS was still twice her size, but we were able to shorten it a bit, and now have a pattern made just for cats!

This is my first clothing project, so any suggestions are welcome! What do you guys think?

My mom thought it would be funny to pull the hood over her head. Instead of freaking out, she curled up and went to sleep! This cat is weird...

haha! The whole picture is just great. I love the sweater (that fabric just screams 'cat sweater!' Wink) but the cat's body language really makes the outfit.
I haven't seen a sphinx in a long time. It's like seeing a naked cat! Second only to seeing a naked guinea pig, or 'skinny pig.'

Looking at that kitty, I just want to make him a tail warmer, because I imagine in a cool house, paws and tails would FREEZE!

Really cool outfit. Unfortunately, since both my cats have plenty of natural inspiration, I'll just have to look at yours and wish.  Neither would let the first paw through a sleeve, let alone a whole sweet skully jacket. Hmph.

I love the thought that ANY cat would be calm enough to stay under the hood and sleep! I bet it is nice and warm in there!

Great job, and sweet of you to think of the kitty's comfort!

(Ooh...what about a kitty corn heating pad for it to cuddle with? We use those in the shop for our outdoor cats when the temps drop below 20 degrees. We just cover the microwaved corn bag with some towels or something so they're not right on the very warm corn. My husband is hinky about letting them play with electrical corded items, or they'd be on REAL all-night-long heating pads.)

For an inside kitty it could be taken a step further, maker the kitty a cuddly bed (there's a tut on here somewhere) with a pocket to slip the heating pack into. I bet that would keep it nice and toasty!

This is so cute If I ever get a fifth kitty I want a Spinx they are so cute!

These cats are already SUPER WARM, but she runs around and cries nonstop if it gets too cold. She doesn't mind us putting clothes on her, because once we do, she stops crying.

We had a heated house thingy for her, but she didn't much care for it. Her favorite place is on someone's chest, or deep under the covers. I've had the bed hiss at me before, it's scary.

Plus, my mom had so many cutesy outfits for her, she needs to be a bada** once in a while.

She's patient enough for a shirt, which I heard took a lot of training. I'm not too sure about pants though...

What a cute idea. I don't think any of my cats would like to wear a hoodie, but I can see why yours doesn't mind. Hairless animals are awesome. Cool fabric choice also.

Awww...i love it. Me and my hubby are sphynx lovers. Weve had two so far. Big Jim and little jim(his wife). He was never fond of clothes but man she loves em.

I think these are the most affectionate fun cates ever. We lost our male a month ago. He strangled himself in an electric cord. Verrry sad.Sad So snuggle your naked baby close.

This first pic is our lil Jim...sitting pretty.

Oh yes, DEFINITELY indoor only! They can't regulate their body temperature like other cats can, since they don't have fur. They are one of the more hardy breeds, but imagine if you would want to run around naked outside? Tongue

Sorry to hear about your kitty Sad.

My mom's cat isn't very affectionate. She's attached to my mom but hisses at everyone else. She tolerates me.

If you'd like a copy of my alterations to the outfit, just message me and I'll see what I can do. It's very versatile and can work for many different types of fabric.

I'm going to make a second one out of fleece with a hole in the back so that my mom can take her when she's doing errands and still use a leash and keep her warm.

I have the potential to become the 'crazy cat lady'. If I wasn't married, they would be everywhere. I want to make cat hoodies for the three that I have so badly!! I love the fabric you used too - it would be so appropriate for our house. And my hubby and I laughed hysterically at definition #1 of why you don't make cat clothing. We tried ribbons on our cats for a Christmas photo once. It just.....ended badly.

It takes a LOT of training. usually best when they're kittens and don't really care. The lady that sold Kissa to my mom put clothes on them every day, and they eventually didn't care if they had stuff on.

My mom doesn't put shirts on her every day, so she's starting to not like it... It's hard work -_-

That is so awesome! I like the big ol' hood. Smiley I was delighted to see your choice of fabric, partially because pirate fabrics rock, but also because I made a human hoodie out of the same fabric. (If you wanted to see, there are pictures here: http://mateywear.blogspot.com/2008/04/dots-stripes-and-skulls-oh-my.html)

Are you going to make more outfits for the kitty? If you do, be sure to show us!!

That's brillaint! my sister would love to be able to dress her cats up but they're not very friendly at the best of times.

How unusal that pulling the hood up made her go to sleep. If I do that to my dog she just walks in circles.

Cute ratty! I heard they are born with fur and then lose it, is that true?

Some are born naked, and others have very thin fur that falls out/grows back in random patches.  I've also had one that only had fur down the middle of its face.  Either way, I swear hairless rats are more intelligent than furry rats.

The sweater is really cute.  I love the fabric.  I like the black hood.  It balances the color out so there's not too much white.

But he's so cute!  My kitty can be quite rambunctious as well.  He likes to attack my legs as I walk.  He's got such an attitude, but he's so adorable (when he's nice, and even when he's mean, it's cute and you have to laugh at him).

Count me in the nekkid critter club as well.

I'd love to see the pattern alterations. Sevie isn't crazy about clothes -- usually I just make sure to leave a couple of blankets out for him to snurgle himself into -- but I think he'd probably adjust. I'm not surprised that pulling the hood over the kitty puts her out -- I joke that Sevie is like a parrot. Throw a blanket over his head and he'll do the same thing; starts purring and just hunkers down.

On a side note, I bought a little ski vest at Target in the dollar bin area. It was meant for XS dogs but actually fit Sevie, and he's about average-sized for a Sphynx, I do believe.

It's not too difficult to fit if they're shorter. Cats are smaller in the front and then as you go back they're pretty much pear-shaped. Just make sure if you do buy anything for him that there aren't any sleeves. They lose range of motion and it can cause problems.
