Filling in the Face
«
on:
February 27, 2005 06:32:54 AM »
I used the search feature, but I didn't find the answer to this, so....
What would be a good enbroidery stitch for filling in a woman's face (and al her skin, for that matter)? I'm planning to use satin stitch for her garments and whatnot, and I thought it would look weird if her face is only outlined while everything else is filled in so nicely. Or am I just being picky? Would the satin stitch work or is there a better stitch?
Thanks!

I would most likely use an encroaching satin stitch or a long and short satin stitch.

Awesome! Thanks! I don't know what an encroaching Satin Stitch is, but I'll look it up. Iknow what a long and short satin stitch is, though!
Thanks again so much!!!!

I would probably use a split stitch for the face.

Ooh! I'll have to practice that one. Everytime I make a split stitch, I see the material showing through so must try that out. Thanks!

Is the material showing underneath the thread or between the stitches? If it's the first, you could use more strands and if it's the second, it means you need to put them closer together. Of course you can go back and fill it in. Each stitch doesn't have to be perfectly symmetrical.

Between stitches. I was thinking I probably need to use more floss. I've always used one strand doubled over (I use the loop that it forms as my initial knot since my knotting skills aren't that great) so even though I'm going through one strand over, a lot of times there's still material. I've had the worst problem on this tea towel I'm embroidering (different project - the face question is actually for a present for my grandmother) but there are all sorts of gaps, but that seems to be because the material is cheap. Oh well, it's just a tea towel and I started doing those to practice new stitches anyway, so....
But enough rambling! Thank you for the suggestions/solutions!!!!

I usually use 3 strands for filling and usually 2 or 3 for outlining. For more delicate embroidery such as a face, I usually use 2.

i agree with cindy, 3 strands is the way to go. i can't imagine doing a fill with less.

Awesome! Thanks y'all! Maybe now with three Ill be less aggravated with filling things in. I always get frustrated and end up just outlining things but I really wanted this present to be different.
Thanks again!!!!
