Oddly, though, the one I keep going back to is one I got for a dollar at a yard sale. It's the New Simplicity Sewing Book, but it really looks like a magazine. It's dated 1979, but I have gotten sooo many good tips out of it. Especially on hand-sewing, which I hate. Best directions on collars I have.

I have this book, and I love it!  I looked on ebay, and you can get one for practically nothing.

a few years ago, after seeing me almost in tears (and sometimes actually in tears) my husband bought me a sewing book for xmas. it's called The Perfect Fit. it has 400 how-to photos and they call it the classic guide to altering patterns. there isn't an author credited but it's put out by Creative Publishing International (www.creativepub.com)  i have found this to be an amazing book and even though i have had it for a few years i still pull it out for reference (lucky charm? Smiley)when i am  altering a pattern. very easy to follow. i have others but this is the one i use most.
i also have a subscription to threads and the vogue sewing magazines as well. and browse the other ones on the shelves Wink
happy sewing!
