Thanks for the comments.  I forgot to mention that she does indeed love it and was genuinely surprised when she first saw it - which leads me to believe she doesn't pay much attention to how I spend my time... Smiley

I generally don't use "real" patterns.  I normally get sprites from The Shyguy Kingdom (http://tsgk.captainn.net/) or from a Google image search.  I use a free program called Stitch (http://people.dsv.su.se/~henrikbe/stitch/) or Dark Lilac's chart generator (down at the moment) to get the correct thread colors.  I don't like the charts those programs output, so I open the image in Paintshop and turn the grid on to show individual pixels.

The font in this piece is from Super Mario Bros., with some letters that don't appear in that game taken from Zelda.  I laid out the lettering in Excel by making the cells into squares and changing the background color.  I had never tried that before, but it was surprisingly quick and easy to see how the finished words would look.
