Do you draw your own pictures.
I use paint shop pro, but you can really use just about any graphics program, even paint which comes with your computer. Pay around with pictures, colors, backgrounds, text size, font, until you're happy with your design. You can get cool fonts at dafont.com. i recommend putting all text inside a shape or over a picture so when you iron it on you won't see the borders of the iron-on sheet where there is no printing.

If you're feeling intimidated or don't want to start out making your own design, google search for your kids' favorite characters, foods, bands, anything you want on a shirt. right-click on the picture and click copy. open up your graphics program and paste it in there. make sure it's a good clear picture that won't look all blurry or pixellated once it's printed. it's a good idea to do a test print first on a regular piece of paper.

as far as iron-ons go, there are two basic types: regular (light shirt) and dark shirt. the light shirt ones will need to be brinted in mirror image. you can either do this in the graphic program or by telling your printer you're using transfer paper. don't do both! these will give you a clear background. the dark shirt transfers are essentially a sheet of thin plastic that will give you a white background. do not reverse your image. follow the instructions on the package.
in my experience, the light shirt transfers crack easily so if you're doing something stretchy, use a dark shirt transfer even if your shirt is light. they just seem like better quality to me anyway. also more expensive.
