I guess I mean paste colouring (I always think of it as gel... excuse my lingo). Basically what I do it pour a little vodka in a bowl and add a blob of food colouring and mix it around. I usually like to leave a bit of the paste unmixed so I can get some darker colour if I need to. Then I just paint with a brush. It's a bit like water colour painting, actually. In fact, I did a cake a while ago where I painted the whole top exactly like water colour.
It's super easy, you just have to play with it.
