Hello Kitty Hat for Baby

I'd love to make a Hello Kitty Cat for my Niece. She was born in March 2011. I tried making her a hat before http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Eiseldora/simple-baby-cap-1 , but I did something wrong and it kept slipping off her head. I then tried to make this pattern:http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hello-kitty-hat, but cast on too many stitches and it turned out adult size.

Anyone want to help me figure out how to make a cute hat  for a 9 month old?

Do you also crochet or just knit? IMHO it is easier to crochet hats than knit.
