This semester, I'm taking calculus at a community college. Our first test is on Monday, and I want to make sure I'm prepared, so I've started studying a few days in advance. I went in to the computer room the other day to hit the books, when, much to my surprise, I discovered that my graphing calculator had gone missing!

Calculus book, check. Notes and paper, check. Pencil, check. Calcu- wait, an abacus!? How on earth am I supposed to use an abacus?! I can barely manage my high tech graphing calculator, let alone an ancient Chinese counting frame with no numbers...Upon closer inspection...

...I discovered that...

My graphing calculator was disguising itself as an abacus all along!

So now it has a cute new protective cozy, and I'll be the coolest girl in school  Cool

Notes: I don't have the making of pictures, because my camera was going on internal memory when I took them and I didn't realize that the card wasn't in it. I took some though, honest! To make this, I single crocheted 2 rectangles (one with a triangle on the end for the flap), using the calculator as a guide for size. The abacus was made with embroidery, with the frame being 2 rows of cable stitch and backstiching used for the black "wires" and putting the beads on. Then the two rectangles were stitched together on three sides, and the button loop was added to the triangle tip, with the button being sewed on last. It was not made to look like a traditional Chinese abacus, but rather, my interpretation of one. This is the first challenge I've entered, and I'm just proud I've finished it (on time, it's 11:57pm Arizona time on Friday Wink) and that it turned out cute like I was hoping ^_^

Very cool, love the beads! I'm a math nerd too  Grin. Why can't all subjects be like math?!?!?!

If anything it gives you something to play with in class when you're bored.

Oh my goodness. I am absolutely in love with this (being a math geek).

BTW, I have the same calculator, but I bought a faceplate and cover to match my school colors.

...darn. I don't have the coolest calculator anymore.

I'm taking Calc I this semester and have that same book.  I spent about 8 hours with it yesterday.  Our first test is Thursday and I'm scared to death.  I'm having a hard time with limit proofs.

Cute cozy!  That's bound to make Calculus a little bit more fun.

Thanks for your comments, everybody ^___^ I feel all warm and fuzzy and happy inside reading them!

Puppy_girl: The beads are sewn into place, in sections of one bead or two beads at a time. If I'd strung them all on one giant stich of yarn, I think it would've gotten tangled or caught up in things in my wild jungle of a purse.

If I make this again, I might experiment with different ways of putting the beads on, like wire or fishing line, to see if I can make something where the beads can move.

Call_me_nny (a fellow JTHM fan?): Feel free to make one, I don't mind if anyone else uses the idea. It'd be cool to see how other people make it, actually.

I like this whole finishing projects and entering them in a challenge thing, it gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment (:

So adorable! My calculator would love one of these. The actual beads vs. crocheted or embroidered beads is a really nice touch.

Thank you very much to everyone who voted for me and/or left their praises and approvals of my project  Smiley 5th place on my first Craftster challenge, not bad if I do say so myself. I didn't know if to many people would "get" it, but apparently there's more awesome math nerds out there than I thought  Grin
