I made this a while ago, but never got around to posting. It's the first thing I ever crocheted, sans pattern, and I think it came out pretty well. I don't have any good pics of it on one of my kiddos, but it fits my 9 year old nicely.

It's a simple enough pattern, but my challenge was to transition from the snowflake shape to the spiral, without weird bunches on top of the head!

Ok, so this is what I used and did - hopefully I transcribed the process accurately/clearly enough. It really is very simple to do - I've actually made about 6 of them now, and given them out to the little girls in my life.

Snowflake hat

Materials:

1 ball Peaches & Crme worsted weight cotton (2.5 oz) white
1 ball Peaches & Crme worsted weight cotton (2.5 oz) light blue
1 crochet hook, size G 4.00mm

Directions:

1.   With white: ch 6, join with sl st to make ring.
2.   ch 6, dc in ring, ch 6, sl st in 3rd chain from hook {makes picot}, (ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook{makes picot}) twice, ch 1, skip next ch of previous ch 6, sl in next ch, ch 1, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in ring, ch 6, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, (ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook) twice, ch 1, skip next ch of previous ch 6, sl in next ch, ch 1: Repeat from * 4 more times (you will have a 6 point snowflake), join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 6, finish off.
3.   With blue: Join blue with a sl st to the top point of the snowflake, by going through the picot, ch 1, sc in same space, *ch 2, sc in next picot, ch 1, tc in ch 3 space, ch 1, sc in next picot, ch 2, sc in next picot, Repeat from * 4 times, ch 2, sc in next picot, ch 1, tc in ch 3 space, ch 1, sc in next picot, ch 2, sl st in beginning sc. (60 stitches).
4.    Sc, ch 2, * skip next 2 stitches and sc in 3rd stitch, ch 2, Repeat from * 19 times, sl st in beginning sc, sl st in ch 2 space. Place stitch marker in this space.
5.   *Ch 3, sc in ch 2 space, Repeat from * for one round. Place stitch marker.
6.   *Ch 3, sc in ch 3 space, Repeat from * for 2 rounds. Place stitch marker.
7.   *Ch 4, sc in ch 3 space, Repeat from * for one round. Place stitch marker.
8.   *Ch 4, sc in ch 4 space, Repeat from * for 8 rounds. Ch 4: join white and drop blue on 4th chain, but do not cut off/finish off blue.
9.   *sc in ch 4 space, ch 4, repeat from * for 2 rounds. On last ch 4 drop white and pick up/join blue, 4 sc in *ch 4 space, ch 1, repeat from * for one round, sl st in beginning sc. Finish off. Weave all ends in.

Hey Fiber People: I am very interested in personal swaps for painted/dyed roving or top. I can swap supplies or crafted items. Let's talk!

Ok - I just updated the original post with the instructions I came up with as I was making them. Hopefully it will be clear, but if you have any questions, post them here or PM me and I'll try to help. =)
