Coffee Creamer Cozy- and a resultant injury
«
on:
September 03, 2008 03:00:12 PM »
This is my first contest entry! As such, I didn't expect it to turn out amazingly well, but I did want to start entering these contests. I am on a limited meal plan at my college, and as such I tend to abscond with extra fruit or cookies, but almost alway I take coffee creamer to save a bit of money on the coffee I make at home. But I've accidentally exploded them in my bag before, which isn't too awesome. I've been wanting to make a container for one for a while.
So I got out the sheep-wool and wet-felted this:
I used felting needles to clean it up, then I dyed it with coffee (it just seemed appropriate) added a button, and did a little whip stitch on the edges to clean it up further.
It still needs a little loop of elastic, but I couldn't find any in time for this contest submission, so I probably won't use it for a little while.
This is what it will look like when closed.
Anyhoo, the part of this that actually is a bit ironic is that this dang cozy injured me! Not directly. I normally keep my needles in a container, but I had a couple loose ones on my desk when the RAs came to do inventory of the apartment, which was recently remodeled with wonderful plush carpet. Long story short, a needle got knocked on the floor and I stepped on it and it went through my foot.
If x-rays bug you, don't look.
After an adventure just getting over to the emergency room, I was told that it was nearly impossible to do what I did, as that's one of the hardest bones in the body. They got the thing out without too much trouble, but being high on vicodin and limping to classes has been a heck of a way to start school. I'm mostly healed now, and I've recovered really well so that's a bright spot to all of this.
thanks for looking, and I hope my injurey didn't make anyone too disturbed

I thought I was the only one who had a crazy semi serious needle felting injury story! I am glad you are okay though ... those things can be dangerous, I have lost copious amounts of blood to that craft.
Very cute cozy!
Blessed be!

All I did was step on it, I wasn't even stomping >< my theory is that it hit a foramen or something. Go ahead and use the image, it's a bit blurry but it is for the name of science
Actually, I've been meaning to make some art out of my old x-rays for a while now (I'm not lying when I say I win for injuries in the family) because I'm an art and a biology student and I like melding the two...

I love the concept. I love the dye job. I love how cute and useful your cozy actually is.
Ironic that those little creamers are sometimes half and half. And that needle was half in, half out, of your foot. Honestly, that is the most creative injury to an artist I have ever seen. You must have felt(ed) awful!

Having a pin go through your foot must completely suck. It helps that day before I went back to school last semester I swallowed a straight pin. Let's just say that it wasn't one of my brighter moments!

Holy shit, that is insane!! I tend to be on the queasy side, so I was like, should I look?? I couldn't resist!! If I did something like that, I think I would just die from the pure squick factor!
But as for the cozy- it's super cute, and a really neat idea. Great job!

I do keep them in a mini m&m's container, it's pretty much a perfect size. Prescription bottle might also work. I could always make the container prettier though...

The cozy is awfully cute.
I am havign sympathy pains for you right now. I've never stcuk a needle all the way into my bone, but I have lodged them in my heel twice. Both times were in a new-to-me house right after a move. The second time I took it as a sign that I was "home".

OMG your poor foot!! That went in your bone?! *gags* I can relate because I somehow got a sewing needle in my knee when I was much younger. I don't remember if it went in the bone or not but it sure felt awfully deep in there.
Cute cozy. I think it would be extra cool to be able to hold several creamers, kind of like a carton of eggs, because I personally need at least two in a cup of coffee if not three. And something for sweetener packets.

Holy cow! Please tell me you have at least one of those x-rays framed along with the needle!
not yet... I'd have to scan them because I think I'm supposed to keep these on file for legal reasons... but that's a good idea

Cute cozy. I think it would be extra cool to be able to hold several creamers, kind of like a carton of eggs, because I personally need at least two in a cup of coffee if not three. And something for sweetener packets.
I'm thinking that this is the next thing I'm going to cozy, I originally wanted to make like a six pack because the coffee I make at home is strong enough to need like, 3 or 4 creamers and I do have a tendency to get my creamer from the cafeteria

You should bring your cozied coffee creamer with you to the dining halls! Glad you're recovering well-- crafting is a very dangerous hobby!
You know... I think I will
People at school are used to me doing things like this by now ^^

OMG, how could you make something as cute as a creamer cozy and follow it up with the most painful x-ray ever?! That'll put the fear of crafting into anyone!!
Great work, btw!

Well, the nice thing about this was that my recovery time was maybe a week, I'm doing quite well now
hope the tendon injury gets better, that doesn't sound fun.

I *love* the creamer cozy!! Soooo cute!
I once stepped on a big sewing needle, and that hurt all crazy like. I thought that was what had happened to you as well, till I saw the xrays! Yikes! glad you are feeling better!

I know... the worst part was that I almost left my shoes on because it was a short lunch break. I so love going barefoot too. Oh well
