I had friend over to teach her how to glass etch over the weekend, so we went to the 99cent store and stocked up on glass.  They had these really great blue glasses, so I got six of them (you can never have enough drinking glasses!)

I have two completed so far.  My hand gets tired after awhile.  I did Bender from Futurama and Gir from Invader Zim.  I am planning to do the whole set of TV characters with cute quotes on the back.

Bender (front)

Bender (back) "Kiss my shiny metal ass" - excuse the glare!

Gir Dancing (front)

Gir (back) "Aww I wanted to expload" - Again, ignore the glare  Angry

My fiance LOVES them.  More to come once I decide to put on the rest Smiley

Awesome! Did you use masking medium to do the quotes?

For the quotes I used scrapbooking stickers, just placed them on there, then used painters tape (which I also cut the stencils out of for the designs on the front) to tape it off.  It etches a negative that way, but it's SO easy.

Thanks!  He's the BEST!  It was so much fun trying to think up a cute saying from him, there's so many!  "Hi floor, make me a sandwich!" was definitely the runner up!

I just love Bender. I use to work at Michaels crafts store and they gave classes on how to etch glass ( Which i didn't have a chance to take) anyway everyone just etched flowers. knowone ever thought to do stuff from tv. What a great idea. Oh and by the way the quote is perfect Bender. Grin  Did you freehand draw him or did you use a photo as your pattern?

My method for glass etching is VERY easy.  I picked images I liked off stencilry.org and printed them out.  They are already made into stencils and they have all kinds of TV shows, movies, bands, etc. HUUUGE lists of stencils.  Once I have it printed out, I cover my surface with blue painters tape.  Then I use scotch tape to tape my computer-printed stencil over the blue tape on the glass.  I use an exacto knife to cut around all the black parts of the stencil.  Once it's all cut out, I take off the computer-print out and leave the blue tape.  I have to peel all the cut out spots off, but it leaves very nice clean edges with the painter tape.  After I peel everything and touch-up anything that may not have been clear cut, I cover the whole design with etching cream (I use armour etch) and let it sit for 30 mins.  The bottle says to let it sit 3-5 mins, but I found if I don't do it as long, it comes out streaky.  After 30 mins, rinse off the cream, peel off any remaining tape, dry the glass, and admire your project  Grin  So easy!  You can use MS paint or word (if you're like me and don't have photoshop  Roll Eyes) to make stencils too, just by making a black and white picture and playing with the contract enough.
