I made this poppet of David Bowie as the Goblin King for the Labyrinth swap.  It was great fun, especially figuring out how to make the clothes!  I made the shirt from eyelet fabric and the jacket from some leftover velvet I had.  It took quite a few tries before I figured out how to make clothes that fit, so I thought I would share the fruits of my labor and post the jacket pattern.

(this one was taken by my partner)

and here is the pattern/tute for the jacket.  I have never made one of these before, so I hope it makes sense!

Resize the pattern so that the 1" reference square is indeed 1" when you print it out

Use a inch seam allowance

1.   Cut out all pattern pieces plus a 5 X 1 strip for the collar.
2.   Turn under long side of each pattern front piece and stitch, wrong sides together.
3.   With right sides together, sew front pieces to back at shoulders, press seam.
4.   Baste just under from edge of sleeve around the rounded part of the piece.
5.   Pin sleeve cap (rounded part again) to the rest of the jacket so that the very center of the rounded part of the sleeve matches the seam you just made when you attached the front and back pieces together.  Pull up basting strings to ease in fullness.  Sew.
6.   With right sides together sew one long seam down the length of the sleeve through the side of the jacket, repeat on the other side.

Attaching the collar:
This is a little tricky, but here goes:
1.   Turn under of the long edge, wrong sides together, and press.
2.   Pin into place on the outside of the jacket so that wrong sides are together and the edge you just pressed under is on the bottom, there should be overhang on either side.  Sew to the jacket and press seam open.
3.   Fold the collar onto itself so that the seam you just made matches up to the very bottom of the edge you pressed under (it should still be folded).  If you have done it right there should be three pieces in this fabric sandwich.  Stitch through all three thicknesses where the front edges of the collar should end.
4.   Trim away excess overhang.
5.   Flip collar so that the right side of the fabric is on the outside, sew the inside bottom edge of the collar in place by hand using small shallow stitches so that they wont show on the outside of  the jacket.

Hem the bottom edge of the jacket and the sleeves.

I hope this is all clear, if not, feel free to ask me about it.  If you do use the pattern and post images, please drop me a PM, I'd love to see how it works out for all of you!

I have a Jareth doll on a list of 'dolls I will eventually make', I was wondering how he'd look poppet-style. He looks so good! You did a fantastic job!  Grin

I love him. Could you show a close up of his eyes? Mine aren't what they use to be.

Awesome - the Labyrinth is tops. But I don't think you quite captured the true "fruitbowl" effect that Bowie was rocking in his trousers!  Cheesy Distracts me every time.

Great work!

Crochet uses a hook. Pirates have hooks, and they are cool. So crochet is cool because of the hook.
