I was doing my friends a favour and tending their shop while they were away on business, so there I was for a week with absolutely nothing to do...other than my shoply duties of course.  But there's a lot of downtime in between making everything look pretty and chatting with customers.

So on Monday I decided to learn to embroider.  I went online and found the basic stitches (I already knew how to backstitch, but everything else was pretty new to me) and started stitching away.

My first one is a wee design that I drew, hardly anything fancy cos I kinda suck at drawing...so it's just a simple widdle birdie and some eggs falling from the sky.  I wanted the stitches in the raining eggs to be random lengths cos I like the look of it.

I didn't notice till I was resizing the images that the yellow bits were all wonky from being folded up in my bag...poo!

The second one I did was a little more complicated, but I've had this idea in my head for a little while and i really wanted to do it.  So of course it's very wonky indeed.  It's supposed to be blackwork (although technically I guess it's scarletwork cos I used red thread...) but the back looks nothing like the front...oops!

and again, the 2 is weird looking cos I didn't bother straightening it out after it was folded up in my bag...

and no, it has nothing to do with Feist's song...it's a secret!

it only took me about ten hours, but weeeeeee do I love embroidery!!!!

I can tell you, Fall is composed of

1 part dead fish smell
1 part wet leaves
1 part arctic chilled air (not winter chilled variety)
2 parts crunchy walking
a pinch very cold rain
some apples you picked yourself
a few very still moments
a good deal of inner reflection

Very nicely done! (BTW, I'm pretty new to embroidery too, but I think when you use all red thread they call it "redwork," so you're not far off! Wink) I think the birdie is adorable and love the raining eggs. What are you going to use it for?

I LOVE the bird!  It's all gorgeous.  If you're a newbie to embroidery, I can't wait to see what you'll come up with next!

oh thank you thank you!  I was a little worried at first because I've seen so many amazing projects here and I felt kind of nervous to show my first projects.

I love the eggs too, I wanted to add something to the background so it didn't look too empty back there.

And I was looking on a British website for all my info on blackwork, and I guess the Brits call it scarletwork, so we're both right! Smiley

Thank you guys so much, I can't wait to start my next project!
