There's so much friggin beige!!!
«
on:
August 26, 2008 07:24:16 PM »
Ok, so i just moved into my boyfriend's apartment and he recently asked me how i wanted to do the living room. Now here is the problem:
We have beige couches, a beige recliner, beige carpet, and beige walls.
I don't like it one bit. It's so boring!
I would love to paint, but since we're just renting an apartment, thats not possible.
We're trying to go for a kind of movie theme. At this point we only have a 300 poster and 2 transformers posters up on the walls. He's really into comic books...i mean...REALLY into comic books so i thought about decoupaging a coffee table with comics. And then i realized that there is no way in hell he would ever let me take scissors to any comic book and if i did anyways, he would turn into the red hulk. So that idea is out. He likes toned down colors and is really into buying sets of matching stuff and things of that sort. I, on the other hand, like lots of color and like cutesy mismatched stuff. So i need to find a happy medium.
Anyone have any good ideas?
It would help me out a lot!
Thanks!

it is of course one thing to cut into HIS comic-books. But will he mind cutting in ANY other comic-books? Look around at fleemarkets or buy new ones. I like the idea of decoupaging the table. Or use photocopied cartoons, get the newspaper-comics to do the decoupage.
And nevertheless he loves toned down colors: you need to decorate with colors that are not toned down. Fortunately beige goes with orange, red, purple, green in most of all shades. All blue-tones with a yellowish-touch will be fine too (like turquoise).
Avoid blueish-shades (even red, purple and green have lots of blueish shades!).
Get cushions, curtains, shawls, plaids, small carpets and accessoiries in those colours.
Just compromise on one of the mentioned colors above to match with beige and the other toned down colors.

What about wall decals you can take down later? There are tons of cute ones on Etsy, also Ikea, Target, etc etc. Black can add a nice "pop" with beige and give you visual interest while remaining neutral for your color-shy BF. There's a good thread about non-paint alternatives for renters in this board, as well.
Bright colored pillows and throws can spice up your bland furniture, and a rug adds lots of color to a room.

Haha I tried this already. If I got any other comic books he'd just want to keep them so he could trade them in for store credit.
*sigh*
Gotta love my nerd-man.
But these are both really great ideas!
Thanks so much, you guys!

You could make pillows or wall decorations out of something like this:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_10&listing_id=12662417

What about printing off pictures of comic book characters and using those to decoupage the table. That would just be printer paper?

True! Sunday comics from the newspaper would be cute, too!

If you can sew, make a sofa cover. If you can knit or crochet, make some colourful blankets to throw on it.
