what?  im surprized they couldnt use 'something' to get the pebble out!  A small sucker like the dentist uses sounds like it would work to me.  Im surprized the doctors dont have something similar.  Have you tried having her lay on her side and maybe the pebble will fall out?  Like have her watch cartoons and lay on her side?  I just dont know.  Poor little thing.

on a crafty note.  i told myself I would stay off the computer and craft, but i want to keep udated on this swaps post.  Anyways, Im off to craft some more.

You could get her to lay on her side with a heating pad or hot water bottle under her so that the heat keeps the wax soft and moving, but I would definately be looking for another opionion on having it removed.

I can't wait for today to be over so I can do some more crafting for this swap  Smiley

Wow, kaymadben - I hope that the pebble is released soon.  I'm amazed that the doctor's gave up and sent you home last night.

On a crafty note - I'm feeling very good about my progress.  From the start, I considered the month of October as the time for planning and getting a good start on projects, leaving November for the freak out month.  Each week, I've been getting stuff done, so all is on track.

kaymadben, I sadly have had many ear issues over the years and might be ablet o offer some help.  If it looks like it is in the wax you can use one part mineral oil to two parts water in a dropper and drop a few drops in her ear to loosen the wax.  Then have her lie on her ear with the pebble in in on a warm wash cloth.  If it is still stuck in there, ask your ped to use a water pic.  I have nasty wax issues and as a kid they pulled out thing the size of my pinkie nail out of my ears.  Sorry, TMI, but it worked.

I hope that helps!  If you don't have mneral water they do have a wax loosener OTC at the grocery store pharmacy.

Maybe these tips will help:

Tweezer Method
   1. Visualize the item
   2. Have the child lay flat and remain still
   3. Have adequate lighting to work
   4. Remove the item with a pair of tweezers or hemastat if you have a pair available.
   5. Use caution not to push the item farther into the ear.
   6. Make sure you get the item out and it doesn't break
   7. Anticipate some ear irritation following the removal. It may be sore especially from people pulling on the ear lobe, child's fingers in the ear, the irritation from the item, etc.

Glue Method
   1. Try putting a dab of school glue (small amount) on the tip of a cotton swab.
   2. Have the child lay still
   3. Allow the glue to become tacky to the touch.
   4. Carefully touch the cotton swab to the object
   5. Wait a couple of minutes until the glue has set and the item is stuck to the Q-tip
   6. Pull the item out stuck to the Q-tip

Vacuum Method
   1. Have the child lay still
   2. Get a small vacuum cleaner
   3. Empty the bag or trash container so if you miss the extraction you can verify you have it by looking later.
   4. Use a small crevice tool or make an attachment by adding a straw with duct tape to the end of a nozzle.
   5. Warn the child it will be noisy.
   6. Allow them to play (supervised) with the vacuum attachment a bit to gain comfort with the noise and the suction.
   7. Put the vacuum just over the ear. Avoid putting the vacuum attachment too close to the ear. You don't want to cause the ear drum to rupture. If you are able to pull the item closer to the surface you can then grab it with one of the above methods.

Water Irrigation Method
   1. Use towels to protect the floor or any furniture
   2. Use a small bowl or basin to collect water
   3. Have the child lay flat and remain still
   4. Position the head to the ear with the foreign body is closer to the floor than the other ear. Gravity will assist flushing the item out and not deeper into the canal.
   5. Use a syringe (no needle).
          * Some pharmacies will let you have a syringe or sell them inexpensively.
          * They are commonly used to medicate infants and pets so you may already have one.
          * You can also use an unused and clean syringe from a marinading kit.
          * Bulb syringes can also be used to suck up water and irrigate ear.
   6. Draw back on the plunger and fill the syringe with mildly warm water. You don't want to burn the interior ear.
   7. Squirt the warm water into the canal.
   8. Continue flushing water into the ear.
   9. After several minutes and you do not see a foreign body in the bowl you can try to visualize the item for extraction by above methods.
  10. Use a mild additive to kill the insect. If you suspect the foreign item is a bug you can add a touch of baby soap, Bactine, peroxide, or diluted conditioner to the water. You may need to kill the bug to get it out. They often try to go deeper until they die. Make sure you rinse the ear with clean water.

Sadly we have tried all these except the vaccuum. I asked the doctor about the vaccuum cause I'd much rather suck it out than try to put anything else IN her ear and he said it might rupture her ear drum. I didn't think about the duct tape and straw. I will have to try that (MAYBE). We have an appt with the ear nose and throat doctor in a couple hours and he said if he can't get it out he will send her to surgery.

ooo nasty! poor little one - hope she gets it out soon!

I've had ear problems all my life (hereditary deafness runs in the family - so i've that to look forward to - oh joy  Undecided !!) - if i get wax build up i put normal olive oil in my ear, its not that different to the normal dissolving oil you buy for loads of money in the chemist.  Basically warm a teaspoon and drip it off that.  Obviously get the clear oil, the one with bits in would definitely be funky!

Hopefully she won't have to be operated on...
