Here's my take on making a drawstring backpack.  I didn't really use a pattern, but for figuring out how to thread the straps, I used Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing book.

The bag is made out of the rest of a sheet from Ikea that I used to make a dress out with, and the "applique" is made from my sister's old jeans.  The reason I put "applique" in quotes is because I know I'm not doing it the correct way... I cut out the shapes, glued them in place with a glue stick, and sewed around the edges.  Hey, at least I used the clear machine foot (for the first time)!

It's smaller than I wish it were, but it's because I didn't have a very big piece of material to start with, so it's okay the way it is.  I can't wait to use it!

i really need to get on finding out how to make a drawstring pack like this... my cousin mentioned wanting to make one recently, but she didn't know how. i think i'll make it for her for christmas, if i figure it out. Smiley

Oh my goodness, that is adorable. Great job! The whale is super cute, and I love the idea of using different shades of denim to create the scene.

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.
