Hey guys!  Cheesy

Summer is almost finished, meaning that autumn and winter are coming very soon...
And since such a project must be quite long to do, why don't we start now?  Wink

Like I said, it's a long project, so if you think you may do one like, in september or october, the topic will still be up for you!

As for my project.

Winter Lolita-ish Coat [ Cat themed ]

Inspiration : x
Pattern (With some modif.) : Burda 7857

I fell in love at first sight with the lolita dress like, 8 months ago. Yet it's too long (Below the knee!) and too costy! (200$... Ouch!)
So I told myself, Why don't I try to do it by myself?  Cheesy
I found a similar pattern, that is like, 90% accruate.

I'll have to modify :

- Add some faux-fur, or another soft fabric, at the bottom of the coat ,sleeves and pockets.
- Maybe add a detachable cat-tail just for the fun of it. ♥
- Make the coat a bit more Poofy at the bottom, and a little bit shorter.
- Add a corset-type thing on the back, so the fit is almost perfect!
- Do the cape (If someone can help me with this... D:)

Material needed :

The Pattern
- 4 yards of Black Wool
- 1 to 2 yards of Faux-fur (Or white wool, depending on price  Embarrassed)
- 3 yards of lining
- To be completed

Progress : 5%

I am designing a coat to be made from an old denim shirt and denim skirt, which I plan to overdye to what I hope will be something like charcoal grey or blue-grey.  I probably won't be actually starting before next month.  Maybe I'll get some sketches done, I'm just in the looking for inspiration phase now, and kind of all over the map, though leaning toward something like a tailcoat or perhaps something else with Victorian influences.

Hi!  I'm going to be starting a winter coat or two ASAP  Smiley  I'll be making Butterick's 4928, which is a vintage swing coat pattern... Or B5189/M5480 (basically the same pattern!) which is a longer swing coat with a Peter Pan collar.  Now, just to get the fabric and some space to sew in... LOL

I haven't started mine yet - I keep getting caught up in other projects.  Of course it's still 90 degrees here, so it's hard to get enthusiastic about coats!  But I will be coating-along eventually.

I gathered my reference/inspiration pics for my jacket:

I'm leaning toward keeping the denim color.

I'm currently working on making DD a jacket using Mccall's 4596:  http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M4596.htm??tab=out_of_print/jackets_coats&page=3

It's going to be black fleece, in the longer length, with a hood based on her last jacket, and much larger pockets.  I've also moved the seams around a little bit and put the pocket in the princess seam instead of the side seam.  Basically, I'm trying to duplicate her old coat, but make it longer. Since I had a bunch of the lining fabric left, I'm also planning on making her some fingerless gloves to go with it.

Ludi, those are really cool coats, but the burgundy one might be a little chilly. Wink Of course, I suppose that also depends on where you live.  Smiley

Ludi helped direct me here - thanks!
speaking of...I love the back of the plaid - top front of the fur trimmed (upper left) and mid section of burgundy...that'd be for me Smiley maybe I'll have to give it a whirl for spring if my winter actually works)

I'll be starting my coat soon too - thought about it 2 weeks ago, but was 85ish outside...now that it's 40 out in the morning - I think I best get hustlin'!
I'll be back with pattern & such soon.
Looking forward to sewing along with others...It'll be my first time - be gentle Wink

Here are the garments I'll be reconstructing into the coat:

denim shirt (way too big)

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL83/536735/777068/337125809.jpg

denim skirt (will become the skirts of the coat as in the plaid example above, and possibly parts of the lapels and sleeves - we'll see!))

I would like to participate in the coat-along.  I'm going to try making my first coat from the New Look pattern number 6736.

http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=6736

However, instead of the collar that is on the coat, I'm planning to add a hood.  I'm also going to (foolishly?) try to line it with material from a quilted matress cover that I no longer have a use for, to make it warmer.  I have some old curtains that I'm going to use for material if they're big enough.  If this one turns out at all well, then I will probably make another later of wool or velvet.

I think using the quilted matress cover is a great idea, not foolish at all. I am one that is all for making a "first draft" out of repurposed material or just material you thought you liked, but either changed your mind on or decided against making.
It'll be a very "green" coat.

I found a couple patterns that I am going to pull a Frankenstein on...
The collar and sleeves of 3562 D (middle pic), front of 4403A (bottom right pic) and back of 3562 A/B (not seen, it's princess with a button tab across the lower back). I am not sure on the length - I only know it will cover my butt (so I don't get a chilled tooshy when I sit this winter  Grin)
Can't decide on side button tabs (4403A) - I am a larger size & not sure if they will just accentuate my non-waist).

Pattern 4403

Pattern 3562

Frankencoat - I like that!
Now I just need to find material that is good enough, but cheap enough in case it doesn't turn out so hot.
Hopefully by the end of next week. My 'plan' is to at least get the pattern cut by the end of the weekend.

I have the main seams sewn on mine now (it looks like a coat). I still need to do the zipper and attach the hood (and hems), but I have to await a decision by DD on whether she wants the zipper to go all the way down to the bottom, all the way up to the top, or both, in which case, I need to buy a new zipper.  Roll Eyes

Hurray for my first ever post!  Smiley Anyway, I'd like to participate, but I'm not really comfortable working without a pattern or tute yet.  Does anyone have suggestions on where to look? I'd like to keep it pretty simple.  Thanks!

I'm still disassembling my garments for reassembly, but I did actually sew a few seams to reshape the shirt to fit me better.  Now trying to decide on what the sleeves should look like...

Mine is on hold.  The curtains I was going to use for fabric are not quite big enough for me to cut out all the pieces.  So, I'm planning to go to the fabric store later this week in search of coat fabric.  I'm thinking wool or corduroy, or jacquard... everything's wide open at the moment.

My used garments also don't have enough fabric for the design I'm contemplating, so I have to dig through my stash to find suitable extra fabric...

Hmm... I finished my daughter's coat today, but the zipper ripples.  I suppose that will teach me not to stabilize the fleece before I sew the zipper in.  Though I've now sewn the zipper twice (the second in an attempt to get it to lie down flatter), so picking the seams out would be a bit of a pain (especially since I sewed the bottom of the zipper three extra times on top of the first two, since my coats always seem to have the bottom of the zipper pull out).  If I didn't have to be up fairly early in the morning, I'd go pick it out and redo it with a stabilizer.  We'll see how ambitious I feel tomorrow (and whether I stay to help at the party my DS is going to tomorrow).

It's irritating that I didn't think of stabilizer before I put the zipper in. It's not like I haven't ever used it before.  Roll Eyes

I am sooooo behind! It'll probably be spring by the time I finish! well, maybe not...but it feels that way now.
I have signed up for 3 craft shows in the next couple of months & need to sew for that too - so the coat is my "down time" and yes, I am a little nuts.

I finally got back to working on my jacket, but I'm having a really tough time of it because I need to drape the pieces, but I don't have a dressform yet - I just ordered one.  I think I'll have to wait to work on the jacket until I get the dressform, because it is just too difficult trying to pin the pieces together when it's just lying as a pile on the bed.   Sad

I've officially given up on my coat-along, because I don't like the way it's turning out.  Blah.   Angry  Guess I'll use these pieces to make something else.

Sorry to hear that.  Sad  I frequently don't sew for myself because I have a hard time getting it to look the way I want it to (fitting issues, my mental figure is about 4 sizes smaller than my actual figure....).  Roll Eyes   I hope you can use the pieces to make something awesome!
