so i completely loved tropic thunder when i saw it in theaters the other day. i found this magazine at kroger and wanted to try my hand at bag making. the final product:
Front

Back

Side 1

Side 2

i absolutely love it, gonna use it all the time:)

and if anyone wants it, heres a tute:

first, you need to tape up/laminate the pics you want to use to make them sturdy. i wrapped mine twice, its pretty time consuming but worth it if you want a strong bag.
these are my laminated pieces

isnt mr. downey just gorgeous?? Wink
ok, so then you lay them on the floor corner to corner like so

measure the rectangle of emptiness in the middle, these measurements will make up the bottom piece of your bag.
i used a really thick piece of paper for the bottom, think construction paper. take the construction paper and cut it into the rectangle shape using those measurements. then i took a piece of sticky-back felt and stuck it to the top of the rectangle to make it look like black lining.

sew the sides of the bag to the corresponding sides of the bottom piece of your bag.
it looks a little goofy at this point, but it looks like this

now sew up the sides to give it a normal shape. lol. i liked having the sides of the bag a little shorter than the front and back, but you dont have to do that.
so this is what you have now

ok, now to make your front and back pieces more sturdy and keep their shape.
i took another pieces of cardboard and cut it to be slightly smaller than the front and back sides so that they slide in really snugly. tape that cardboard up like you dide for the magazine pages.

then i used a tshirt for lining. basically i just wrapped it around the pieces of cardboard and taped it down on one side like so

slide the pieces into the sides of your bag, if it doesnt fit snugly enough to stay in place you can tape it down and no one will notice or care.

i didnt put cardboard lining on the side pieces because i like them to be able to fold if i need them to.
fold over the top edge of the magazine pages a little bit. about 1/4 inch. then sew them down to make the edges smooth.

put in your grommets. its pretty easy, and they usually come with instructions.

put in your chain

and voila!

you have a kickass purse!

Good job! Maybe you should put this in the reconstructed bags section instead though Smiley

Very nice.

I have some Mike Myers mag & newspaper pics I've been saving to do this with - but have been a little initimidated by those corners.  You make it look very easy.

Guess I'll be moving that project a little higher up the "to do" list  Grin

Nice work!

It's not that I don't want to swap, it's that I often don't have time.  But feel free to ask (especially if it's one that's not too time consuming).
