So here's what I've been up to for the last two weeks: meet Gilligan's Island (so named by our neighbors).

We (my mom and her boyfriend, my boyfriend and I, and the occasional curious neighbor) built a new dock at my mom's place. Its made out of red cedar and is supported by a pontoon-like system made of large PVC pipes. the dock itself is 20x8', and the ramp is 16x4'. This is my boyfriend and I's first real experience with power tools and I stupidly neglected to take progress shots of the build until the very end.

Now for the reason of its namesake - the two boyfriends rigged up a system where the last board of the dock, where it attaches to the ramp, it cut and hinged to that the middle section can be opened. the dock pins can be pulled out and our little 15 HP boat motor can be attached, letting us motor around the lake on the dock. wait, its cooler than you think! means we get to go where ever we want on the lake to snorkel while someone can relax on the dock to protect us from other boats Smiley
Here you can see them working out the details of their ingenious system

Now what am I doing in this photo? Well I decided any self-respecting sea vessel needs a jolly roger, so I decided to stain one into the wood of the dock.
tape, tape, taping away... (I think the boyfriend has been overcome by the heat...)

partially taped off skull

applying the stain with my mom

stained Jolly Roger

With UV protection sealer

and the finished dock

Snoopy approves!

it wasn't quite what mom had in mind (think Muskoka with Adirondack chairs and planters) but she likes it. except for the motor thing... she's rather mortified about that. She plans on painting her Adirondack chairs red, orange and yellow. I told her it was Muskoka-Caribbean Wink

Marabelle - yes, its all freehanded. there were lots more details i would have liked to have added, but the boys were anxious to seal the thing up so we could go swimming for the rest of the day. I think I did pretty good for the amount of time i had.

dellastella - we aren't acually in Muskoka, my mom just wishes she was. she dreams of retiring there Wink
