Hi everyone! So it was my niece's 5th birthday and I wanted to do something special for her. I decided to make her a cake. She said she wanted Strawberry Shortcake or the little mermaid. I choose Strawberry shortcake. The cake is a lemon cake 4 layers with strawberries and strawberry whip topping. Everything is make by hand. The only things I got pre-maid were: the marzipan (I used it to cover the cake and mold the figures) and the yellow cake mix. Oh my! this cake took a long time. It was my first time doing such a detailed cake and my first time with marzipan. The marzipan tasted good but is pretty expensive. If I did it again I think I could cut down the prep time in half.
Here is a close up of Strawberry Shortcake

Here is the cake

My Niece with the cake. Isn't she cute?

Sister-in-law cutting the cake. Bye Bye

And this was all that was left.

Please let me know what you think and if you have any pointers to help with marzipan please let me know.lol  for next time.

Oh too cute!  Grin
I couldn't make a cake that cute and then watch someone cut it up.  Sad
The niece is adorable. I love red hair. I don't thing she could be any happier.
You did a spectacular job.

mmm that looks yummy! You did an awesome job, and I'm glad you went with 80's Strawberry instead of 00's Strawberry (I just can't get into the new one!)

Wow, this is just awesome.  I can tell from the look on your niece's face she loves it.  Great job.

That is as awesome cake.  Not that it is help with the marzipan .. but if you wanted to cut the cost down, you can use modeling chocolate for the figures and fondant frosting to cover the cake.  I LOVE marzipan ... but also know how expensive it is ... so I tend to make my figures with it and use the marshmallow fondant for the basic covering.  But in this case ... I wouldn't change a thing if you can afford it.  You seem to have a touch for the marzipan.
