Well I finally got up the nerve to post one of the purses I've made. I made this about a month ago. Usually I like a shoulder strap but had this idea floating around in my head and gave it a try. I'm kinda liking the smaller size, not as much room in there to stuff a bunch of junk so I can actually find my stuff when I need it. (Don't you hate that! You know it's in there you just can't ever find it!)
Any whoo! I got the fabric at Big Lot's a 2 yrd piece for $5. I also got a lime green in the same pattern. It remains uncut as of yet. I tried to match the pattern so the font and back are the same and the top inside and out are the same with just a scrap of beige for the lining.

Thank You Smittenheart Smiley
Maybe I won't be so chicken to post again if I could just get to start sewing again. I just had surgery on my right shoulder and I can't use it yet at all so I'm doing everything one handed. It stinks all this time off of work and I can't even sew Cry. Got 3 more weeks in a sling then who knows how much therapy.
That's what you get for still trying to play softball in your 40's. So all I can do is look at all the pretty things people make on here and wish.
Thanks again, it is very much appreciated.

Adorable! I have that fabric from Big Lots in black/cream, lime/cream and red/cream. All sitting there in a pile...waiting....waiting...for the great procrastinator! How much fabric did your purse actually take? Smiley Oh, and 40's are the new 20's....LOL!

Very cute purse. I love that fabric. I haven't been to Big Lots in a long time. I didn't know they sold fabric.

Lovely bag!  I had that surgery too, I feel your pain.  Take heart, after your therapy it will be as good as new, and you can sew up a storm!!  Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

It only took about 1/2 yard of the outside fabric give or take alittle because of trying to match patterns. It measures 12"L x 6"H x 4"W.

Very pretty!!! If you don't mind me asking....what kind of interfacing did you use? I have a really cute purse pattern, but when I get to the interfacing section of Jo-anns I don't know where to begin! =D

It's ok to ask the people that work there. They should know. I do it all the time and I've been sewing for 45 years. Although sometimes the workers are too busy or unfriendly... At my store they are pretty nice.

I didn't use any interfacing. I try to use heavier weight wovens, or canvas like fabrics so i don't have to bother with it. This fabric is a drapery weight type fabric and the lining was a med weight fabric. In the photos the purse has my wallet cell phone and stuff in it, but it is still pretty sturdy. If your outside fabric is liht weight just use a heavy weight fabric for the lining or vice vesa. That is what I tend to do.

Cute purse! What pattern did you use for this?
I basically used the Jordy tutorial here.
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=32204.0
Except I made it an A-Shaped Jordy bag by angling the sides so the bottom would be wider than the top. Next I cut a strip off the top (depending on the size you want the top band to be + seam allowances). Using the pieces you just cut, cut 2 more of the top strip out of your outside fabric.(these 2 will now become the top piece of your lining) & 2 of the bottom out of your lining fabric. Made my handles and inserted them where you want them on the sides between the top strip you just cut off and the body of the bag and sewed the top strip & the body back together, iron the seam up toward the top band and topstitch. Doing the same thing with your lining pieces (minus the handles of course). Then finish the same as you would with the Jordy. I didn't use interfacing but if you do just cut it to size of your pettern pieces after they are stitched back together and top stitched.
Hope this helps.
I also would like to Thank everyone who has posted tutorials here for the inspiration I got to make this bag.
And "Thank You" to everyone who has commented on my bag,and the wishes on my speedy recovery from my surgery. ( It will never be speedy enough Wink)

So cute!!!!   I had not idea that Big Lots carried fabric, either.  I'm going to have to stop next time I'm close to one.

Excellent job!  Hope the shoulder is better!

I have made this type of bottom before for a lunch sack.  How do you alter the pieces to make the bag bottom so nice and wide?  Is that just what happened when you angle it?  I'd like a 4"-5" base on my next bag, and only about 12"-14" high overall.

Yes the angle is the key for a wider bottom, and narrow top. I love this pattern because you can alter it so easily. Just by changing where you place the straps you have a totally different style bag. Just use you imagination. (mine is going bonkers while my shoulder is healing, shh... don't tell my DR. that I'm trying to sew all ready!) Lips sealed
Ha! just now typing this reply I got a new idea on how to alter the pattern for a totally new bag.
I smell a new prototype!
Hint: I'm thinking gathers
