My fiance, our friends and I went camping this past weekend and I'm a total shutterbug, so I had to take photos of everything we saw.

We rescued these little guys off the road as we were walking. They are Red eft newts and are really common in our area apparently, although I've never seen so many of them before. We counted 42 smooshed ones and found 16 lives ones. We put them in a bait bucket, and I took some photos of them.

You can check out my Flickr for higher resolution photos. Smiley

and some close ups of the little wigglers..

Clearly, they have no issue stepping on each other's head! Cheesy

None of the newts were hurt. My FH and I kept 8 of them and our friends kept the other 8 and they all live in nice big newt-i-tats (yes, I made that word up) that cost me as much as a bearded dragon set up would have. Wink

These guys  are really cute. I love the contrast in the photo between the orange lizards and their background...or newt-i-tat.

That's actually the bait bucket we put them in as we found them. Smiley Their new home is a 20 gallon lizard tank that is partially ground and partially pond. It was a lot of work but will be well worth it.

What do they eat?

They eat crickets, fruit flies and small worms. All things I can pick up easily at the pet shop. Smiley

Thanks everyone! Their colours are really vivid. As they age they'll grow duller, like the 2 in the last photo. They also can live up to 10 years. Neat.

Those are some awesome shots! The color contrast is great. Those newts are such pretty colors! And yay for rescuing cute little amphibians and giving them a good newt-i-tat! Hehe.

Yes they can be very poisonous!!  I almost lost my cat who mouthed my pet newt (didn't consume any part of it).  Same toxin as the Fugi fish.  If you have any small children or pets in the house, I would recommend setting the newts free close to a pond!
