I have a very old book called Good Housekeeping New Complete Book of Needlecraft
not sure of the yr or anything but it has a pattern for a Soaker in Afghan Stitch. Maybe you could see if the library has a copy of this book or something.
I don't want to get into trouble for posting the pattern or I would.

About halfway down this page http://www.freepatterns.com/list.html?cat_id=304 there is a set called "mix and match outfits" which has a shorts pattern which could possibly be used as a basis.

My DIL made this soaker but didn't add the velcro http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=185386.0. She's going to just use pins on the tabs. Also here is another blog that has several different soaker and wool ideas. http://katrinassqs.blogspot.com/

I'm working on crochet longies right now myself.  I'm crocheting them because I love to crochet and am a cranky and slow knitter, but I've also heard that crocheted diapers work a little better in spite of the holes because they are a little thicker and use a little more yarn than knitted.
Anyway, you can buy crochet diaper patterns here http://www.ladybugz.ca/store/, or there is a really cute soaker in the book Natural Crochet for Babies and Toddlers, http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Crochet-Babies-Toddlers-Barrett/dp/1861086245/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250546028&sr=8-1.

I bought this book last week at AC Moore (using my 50% off coupon), all the patterns in this book are very very cute.
