Yesterday, my daughter and I saw a link on http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=2524.0 by gypsylakat about finger weaving (actual tut is at http://www.wikihow.com/Finger-Weave), which I think should be called finger knitting.  We gave it a try on one hand, but thought the results were too narrow.  So, I tried all ten fingers!  Very easy and quick to make.  Here are a couple I just made last night:

plain white

red and gold - (I used 2 colors, one on each hand, at the same time and switched after several passes.)

Any questions on how we did it, just ask.  I'd love to hear what you think.

Here are some pics of my hands.  Forgive the quality.  My 5 year old had to take them.

I remember doing this in 3rd grade on one hand, but on both?! Impressive! Smiley I don't think I'm that well choreographed. Tongue Love the red and gold.

How do you take the bottom loop over the top loop to drop it? Does someone help you? Do you use your mouth?

very ingenious. I've been finger knitting for a while on one hand, because I didn't have the time to teach myself how to start knitting for real.

The white ones my favorite. It's gorgeous.

Oh wow!!! This brings back so many memories!! I used to do this when I was a kid! We used those little fabric loops... what are they called... *does some quick googling*

These things!

I used to love those!! We'd criss-cross one over our fingers like you have shown, then do a second one, and pull the first over the second, then put on a third and pull the second over the third... etc. I used to have a whole scarf made that way. I'm so nostalgic right now!

pinkricepudding, it was tricky at first, but if you weave really loose you can bend your hands together to pull them over with your thumb and pointer.  The pinky on my right seems to be the toughest one to reach.  I wiggle it around until I can reach it or use a closer finger.

NyteRayn, those loops look fun.  However, my family complains when I buy more craft supplies.  So, I have to use up what I have, first.  Sad (Like that will ever happen.)  Most of my yarn came from a my great aunt who used to crochet.

Next Experiment:  I want to have someone stand beside me and knit even wider together.  But, my daughters hands are too small for mine.  Any volunteers?  Smiley

kimmy_sue05, I added the tutorial link I used to the top of this thread.  To do it with ten fingers, just keep weaving over to your other hand.  The yarn should be infront of one pinky and behind the other one.

I think you can make those little potholder thingies with a piece of cardboard. My grandma is very thrifty and I know she's made several as well as those "butterfly" weaving looms.
Love the concept with 10 fingers. I never would have thought of that. They're so pretty! I love the "lacy" look. Very elegant. How long did they take to make when using both hands? I'm thinking it might be a great project for christmas. Smiley

Eliea, like I mentioned above, we learned one-handed from the tute, played around with it for awhile and completed both 10-finger scarves in the same night.  One scarf probably took a couple hours cuz I just learned.  With practice, I could get it done in one hour easy.

I know how you feel I just recently printed off some info and then it made sense good luck.

And I'm so going to try this as soon as I get some yarn.

Please post pics/links here if you do try finger weaving.

I'm trying crochet, too.  Mine is currently too tight and uneven.  I can't seem to figure out where to add the second row to, either.  Keeps twisting and looks really messy.  Sad

For learning to crochet I highly recomend trying to find a picture tutorial for each step. I'd recomend about.com as they have the pictures showing a regualr yarn and big hook so it's easy to see how to do everything!

The tutorial that I found that made the most sense to e I got from the Lion brand yarn site. They also have a bunch of free patterns for knitting and crocheting. Here let me see if I can find the links http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?store=/stores/eyarn&learnToCrochet=1 I also watched a tonne of videos on YouTube. Hope that helps.

After seeing this I had to try finger knitting.  I only used one hand though, it was really fun and a quick craft!  Wonder if my hubby would let me borrow his hands...don't think I could have both of mine tied up! This is probably a stupid question, but I am new to this type of craft...how did you do the tassels?  I have an idea..

...how did you do the tassels?  I have an idea..

Not a stupid question at all.  I wrapped some yarn around a piece of cardboard or some use a cd case.  (Anything sturdy enough that will produce the length of tassel you want will work.)  Then, cut the yarn off the board and fold them in half making a loop.  Tuck the loop of the tassel into the stitches on one end of the scarf until you can open the loop and fish the ends through that loop.  Pull it snug and you're done with one tassel.  A crochet hook makes it easier to pull the ends through smaller tighter stitches.

Mine are made with just one tassel tied in all stitches across the edge.  Use the same stitches you tied off through.  On the Red/gold scarf I just tied the ends together with another piece of yarn tied in a knot aound them.

I did a quick search for instructions with pics and found these:

Basic instruction for "fringe" tassels - http://www.learn-how-to-crochet.com/fringe.html

Here is instructions for a fancier type of tassel - http://www.learn-how-to-crochet.com/tassel.html

I've also seen some where just one end of the tassel ends were fished through and tied together in a half-hitch knot.  So, no looping over.

Hope all of this is useful.  If you like, go ahead and post your results in here.  I'd love to see your work.

As for using two hands, just hope the phone doesn't ring.  That's a bit tricky!  Shocked

thanks so much!!

I think I will "knit" another one and then combine the two somehow...and then add tassels.  It's kind of skinny otherwise.

I have some soft white yarn I am going to try with your method of 2 hands, I hope it turns out as good as yours!

I know.  They are really skinny on one hand.  I also tried weaving the single hands together like this:

But, I haven't made anything wearable, yet.  Might make a nice throw.

I think it would make a very pretty throw in my humble opinion. It's simple, and open so it would look really nice with a thin fringe or tassels. Smiley
