4.8.08 i-wanted-a-circle-skirt-too skirt and lessons learned of the day

poll- how much more yellow does this thing need. -this was a serious question, i think it might need pockets trimmed w/ yellow
i will now stop gaping at brightly coloured things.
my family will no longer call my clothing ugly.
i DID learn the importance of even seam allowances w/ this skirt.
i still have no idea where on earth i'd wear this. and it's a bit too dangerous to turn 180 degrees rapidly because. well. it twirls. and. it's short.
i'll go make another, longer circle skirt now. and my family can practice NOT saying, "ugly"
this fabric is garish, yes, but it was in my mom's fabric stash for years. she was strangely drawn to it and now i'm strangely drawn to it and so it became the skirt of the day. maybe not beautiful but highly sentimental. i have no idea what it is, it's stiff. it's heavy, it's cotton, but it's one garish print, so why not add a suitably garish yoke.

since i've been making skirts without patterns some of the reasons for  even, consistent seams have been lost on me. today i realized several reasons why they are so important. yeah, sometimes slow on the uptake. the uneven look of it is because of the fabric. after several deconstructions the seams are all actually even and it really is a circle skirt now, not a 49.99% circle in back and 50%circle in front like it was in the beginning

it's not finished because i've had company/help for all the other bias binding i've made. right now the cats are probably ingesting a few yards of bright, frightening yellow not-finished-being-ironed-let-alone-sewn-on bias binding. i also realised i wanted it longer. not sure how much longer. taking a poll. i think adding a whole lot of scary yellow length is going to be bad, but the thing's never even going to get worn once if i can't safely bend over to pick something up off the ground without risking arrest.
after sewing willy nilly jut for the practice of it regardless of what fabric's available to me.. my closet is very.uhm. exuberant looking with the skirts hanging in all their glory. my mom'd at least be glad to see me wearing something other than jeans and a black tshirt

I think it's very cute!  I always struggling with following sewing rules... any purses I've sewn seem to turn out about 2/3 of the size I aimed for...

thank you:> i think what i should probably do is just take a sewing class, but then i figure i'd still probably only really learn it by doing it<and doing it wrong to see why i can't do it some shortcutting way> so, i dunno if it'd be worth it or not, but it would be nice to sew with other people. anyway, now i'm having a onesided conversation convincing myself to take a sewing class.
i've done the amazing shrinking via sewing bag thing too though:)

ok. got it. I've been taking alot of, "honey, you're so pretty, why are you making such -ugly- things?" my grandmother's not cruel, but she sure doesn't hold back the judgements.
i will be bright
i will be colourful
i will not cave to the vipertoothed comments of elder female family members, nor let it diminish my sewing glee.

I don't think this is garish at all, I think it's adorable!! Sometimes you have to say to yourself, "I don't care if "insert name here" doesn't like it, it's ME!!" Great job, and I love seeing a new skirt every day!

it's 8am and my family's getting phone calls, they're all good sports.  after mom died though they've sort of stomped me to death with comment, criticism & advice. i'll continue to accept most of it cheerfully, but they can back off with fashion judgements.
my oh my what sort of family dynamics changes a lil circle skirt can make.

I think it's lovely from your picture.  Maybe a pair of yellow shorts can solve your decency concerns.
