2.8.08-skirt- when the pattern says stripes.. best believe it.

At  11pm I decided I really did want to try and make a skirt today, so I looked through the tutorial list, thought RickRackRuby’s striped neat hemmed skirt, http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=34064.0, would be –awesome- wait, I’ve got no striped stretchy fabric. That’s ok, I have a whole lot of this eyebursting stretchy fabric.

Mistake of the day #1- when the pattern/tutorial asks for a specific fabric you don’t need to blindly believe it, but think about why. Really stop and think about WHY it asks for that fabric if you want to deviate. Skirts doing neat stripey visual tricks-AWESOME. Skirts causing seizures in passerbyers on the street is not so cool.
Success #1- used my sewing machine w/ stretchy fabric and it went great. Love zigzag stitch. Not much else to say about that.
Successishness #1  ½- like using the giant cutting mat rather than measuring, seems a whole lot easier than fighting with the cats for the measuring tape, I throw the measuring tape to them to distract while I wield scissors, all is well.
Lessons for both good and evil learned for the day. Don’t think I’ll ever wear it. I think I’ll shove it in the suitcase of things to reconstruct. Maybe it wants a second chance at life as a blinding tank top, or something.. not sure.. but that’d be another lesson.. pattern+cut=visual impact.. sometimes that impact is a pleasant touch. Sometimes it’s a boot to the head.  Both are great, it’s just good to have a vision of what’s to come when you start, at least an inkling.

I think it's cute. Although I think the pattern on the skirt will only allow you to wear very plain shirts with it.

heyya, thank you. i just. i managed to totally miss the point that why that skirt looked so neat to me was how it hung, and the stripes at angles, and vertical and horizontal and all. sort of a biting into a slice of red cake expecting cherry and getting strawberry. why i should be so surprised i dunno. but i sure was

I think it's really cute, actually! Probably not what you had originally envisioned, but attractive all the same. It's funky--I feel like it could be really cute with a pair of tall boots, a dark shirt, and a scarf? Random, but I dunno... I know I wouldn't just shove that in a suitcase somewhere!!!

By the way... your skirt-a-day idea is really inspiring. It's a lot of fun to watch how things turn out.

thank ya:> it gets sort of tedious sometimes, and probably for people viewing too.. sort of mechanical ya know.. i sort of think there's a difference between art and craft though... anyway. just sort of my own personal sewing workshop to improve skills rather than improving them only when there's a particular finished product i want.. i don't WANT a skirt every day. but at least this way i'm consistently learning, eh?

i just want to say "THANK YOU!!!"   you just turned my frown upside down with that little schpiel about following instructions about fabric. i mean, you had me laughing out loud for the first time today. because you know we have all done it... hahaha
i do genuinely like your skirt, though!!!  it's not seizure-worthy at all, and with a black top and boots, i think it'd be pretty darn hott!

jennyduckling- glad you got a laugh out of my woes.. my obsession with skirt sewing remains but i haven't gotten to sew anything in months now.. :< glad someone's at least still getting some giggles from ghosts of posts past though...

lovelikegravity- i saw responses to this thread and clicked on it and forget dora had been in the pic.. she died in october:< she was the loveliest, fastest most helpful seamstress kitten:< such small furry nonspeaking creatures but they leave imprints on your life.. in dora's case BIG imprints. my soft sweet fluffball:/ related to the post though, this skirt has been a beloved cat and ferret bed.

Ohhh, I'm so sorry.  As much as I liked your post (make me laugh... a lot), the only thing I really wanted to reply to was the beautiful mini-lion, I mean, kitty.  She's gorgeous.  Be happy you had the time with her that you did.

ballpoint needles are the best for knit/stretch fabrics..

And I think it looks cute! It's like a picnic-at-the-park skirt.
