What books would you recommend? I'm looking specifically for stitch dictionaries and general techniques rather than patterns, though if you have any recommendations, I'd take those too!

I can't really bring myself to buy knitting books, I always chicken out because I have no clue if it will be helpful or not.

Knitting from the Top by Barbara G. walker. It has changed my views on knitting. But since you'd prefer stitch dictionaries, I heard good thing about her Treasuries of Knitting Patterns  but I haven't seen them.

I've recommended this book so many times I should start getting a commission!  But the book The Learn to Knit Afghan book is really fantastic.  There are 63 squares, each a different pattern.  Each pattern tells you how many stitches to repeat so it's easy to use any of them for a larger object.

Oooh, those all sound perfect! I have a birthday this month, I'll go ahead and splurge on them. Thanks!
