I live in an apartment with no yard of my own and it makes me sad. So I decided to make some moss terrariums after admiring the ones I saw on Flickr: http://flickr.com/search/?q=terrarium. They are awesome because they pretty much water themselves! A self sustaining ecosystem!  These were made with plain glass lidded jars, adding a layer of gravel for drainage, a layer of potting soil*Note: Since making these I have since read that moss shouldn't be grown on potting soil with fertilizer. Best to use soil from it's natural habitat*, and then pressing moss down into the dirt.  I choose two different looking mosses that I found. I also added some kitschy miniatures in some of the photos. Tell me which ones you think I should include in them permanently!

The two jars without the additions

Caterpillar

Walrus

Octopus

Flying diapered monkey thing?

Dog/Bear guy

Owls

Apples

Ack! so cute!  I totally vote for the walrus, but I'm torn for second place.  Did you purchase the moss? or just put in some that you found?  Sorry, if that's a dumb quesion, I'm not a green-thumb at all.

Thanks! I'm glad you like em.  Yeah I like the walrus too even though he looks a little out of his element. heh  same with the octopus.   I just got the moss from outside in the lawn of my apartment building.  You can usually find it under trees like right by the roots and trunk.  It's fairly easy to just pull it up from the ground.  I got a lot of weird looks from neighbors though... heh

Definately the apples---they made me laugh.
But why choose?  Change them at your own fancy!

Oh oh I *love* them!!!!!

I have a 3-way tie for walrus, octopus, and apples!

I wonder if this idea would work for other plants that like water like venus fly traps Huh

PS, ROCKS

will the moss reattach itself to the soil and then grow? that's great!
