I totally LOVE Halloween.  I start thinking about it in about August of every year, so I thought it was appropriate to post this guy... I built him for display on my favourite holiday!  He's made of paper and fabric mache and he's about 4ish feet tall.  I tried to make his teeth look like cracked and split wood to add to the "tree-like" effect.

Unfortunately, my husband puts on a Scooby-Doo costume and totally upstages my tree with all the kids on Halloween... but I still love my tree.

My boyfriend saw this pic when I logged into craftster.
"What is it. click on it" "SEEEEEEE OTHER PEOPLE LOVE HALLOWEEN TOO" "AWESEOME"

this has been a reenactment of our conversation. but pretty much how it went. It's a great tree though, I love it too.

That is so great!!!  My nephew's grandpa dresses up like a scarecrow every Halloween and sits in the rocking chair on their porch.  All the kids think he's a stuffed scarecrow until they get all the way on the porch and then he springs up and scares the crap out of them!!!!!  It's so funny.  Your tree is amazing!  The textures and the dimension are awesome!  The teeth are especially eye-catching and I think you definitely achieved the split wood effect you were going for.  It's deliciously evil!

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was The Grinch. But the tree is WAY cooler. Nice work! (I love Halloween!)

Oh, man! This would have totally scared the SOCKS off me when I was a kid. I think I was traumatized for life by the trees in "Wizard of Oz" and "Babes in Toyland."

This tree's delicious malevolence brings it all back to me!
Great job!

I am really impressed.  I have always been more of a Christmas person, but I'm getting inspired to do more for Halloween this year.  Did you use something as a frame for the tree?  How long did it take you to make it?  The detail and painting is wonderful.

Cheesy  That is way cool!  You captured Halloween perfectly!  One question, where do you store it off-season?  I love big decorations but we live in a tiny house and have found it hard to find adequate storage.  Great Job!!

This is the coolest tree EVER.

I have plans of doing my Hallowe'en decor NEXT year as an Unseelie/Haunted Forest, and this is GREAT inspiration.  I even added your post to my blog (if you want me to take it down, I will.....but I thought other Haunters would HAVE to see your amazing tree!).

Crazy... thanks.

I have no idea where I'm going to store this thing.  I'm sort of a make-it-first-ask-questions-later kinda girl.  We just moved, and I'm not sure where I'm going to put it.  Maybe wrap it in plastic and put it in the garage??? I've managed to house a 7 foot papier mache giraffe over the last two moves, so I'll find room!

That's the best!!! We put up a Halloween tree in our house each year but it is typically a dead branch sprayed black and decorate with orange and purple lights and spooky bobbles. Something more like that but still with decoration would be a big step up! Thanks so much for sharing....*off to the office to sketch some pics*

What a brilliant idea!! I hope you don't mind if I borrow the idea slightly for the halloween ghost trail at a museum where I volunteer? Last year I painted silhouettes on to the walls of 'spooky trees', but it'd be really nice to have some 3d ones...

Did you make a wire frame or something for it?

What's the easiest way to explain the frame....?

First I started with a piece of 1" plywood, I cut an irregular lumpy and bumpy circle out with a jig-saw.  This made the bottom of the tree.  I then wrapped the bottom edge of chicken wire fencing around the base, into all the nooks and crannies of my lumpy bumpy plywood circle, securing it with a staple gun. This make a big chicken-wire cylinder with a flat plywood bottom. I folded and creased the chicken wire to make the bigger grooves in the tree bark.  Then I stuffed that mama-jamma with balled up newspapers (How ironic, my sister noted, that I would use so much paper to make a tree.) and used packing tape/ masking tape/ duct tape to stabalize the trunk, then I added some layers of paper/fabric mache.

I used smaller tubes of chicken wire to make the branches and wired/ taped them onto the main tree trunk.  Then I covered the whole beast with more fabric mache, using the fabric to make the smaller wrinkles and folds in the tree bark.

That's about the jist of it.  Good luck with yours! Hopefully you have some help, cuz all those layers of mache really take time!

Doh, thanks for the pointers!! Smiley Doubt mine will look anywhere near as great as yours, as I don't think I'll have quite the same care and attention (due to lack of time! It's not easy filling a fort with spooky things... tis fun, though! ^_^)

If it's successful, though I'll post a pic!  Grin

Your tree is wonderful!  We love Halloween at our house, also, and have ove rthe past couple of years been trying to make some pieces rather than buy.  A tree might be out of our league, but it's terrific inspiration!  Thank you!!

this tree is awsome. i sooo love halloween. i met my honey in a haunted house in highschool over 20 years ago. he also says its awsome. we have a special place in our hearts for the awesomeness of the october holiday. i might even give this a try. i mean if it turns out looking like crapola it wont really matter cause halloween is so forgiving!
