Vintage reconned slip - chocolate and strawberries

I just reconned a plain, flesh-toned strapless slip into a sexy slip dress! I dyed it brown, added pink lace, and embroidered the pink strawberries. I'm having much fun with slips lately!

The pink and brown are lovely but the embroidery really adds the punch!

i have a few suitcases of clothing to recon.
a wall of fabric

and now i want to go find adorable vintage slips to make more adorable. i'm glad you keep posting these so i can live vicariously through the wonderful pics.. vintage slips, hand embroidery, hanging on a clothesline... great way to start every morning and pretend i live in vintage adorable land... until i have to leave the apartment and face the real world where logos replace embroidery. thanks for great Craftster starts to my mornings lately though your slips just get more and more wonderful

Thanks! You should definitely look for vintage slips! It's super fun. It's a little time consuming but there are so many possibilities, and embroidery is relaxing. I like to do it while watching netflix.  The slips aren't bad to work on at all.

Aw, thanks! I run across them in thrift stores quite often! This one I almost overlooked, it was nude colored and plain, kinda like a sausage casing, LOL. But I decided it had potential and voila!

i had to laugh out loud. i really wanted to emulate you and i thought embroidery would be great to keep my hands busy while i give in to my new obsession with streaming netflix movies and tv series.

Ha! Were we seperated at birth? You should try it! It's fun and relaxing! It's not a speed sport, but it's one that doesn't take a lot of special equipment!

ok, back to your post again because on a separate brain path earlier today i was thinking- i've been making lots of skirts.. hmm most aren't lined.. hmm some are too sheer.. hmm i would like slips..
so now i have a perfect reason to actually try my hand at emulating the vintage glory. a justified love!

what kind of material are the ones you're using made of, that take the dye so nicely and politely...?
do you make up the designs you embroider on or is there some wealth of embroidery patterns out there that i just need to explore?

for some reason i'm totally hooked on wanting adorable slips now.

   I buy vintage slips in thrifts stores and such, and then dye them, usually with dylon, they take the dye really well. Most of them are made of nylon, although once in awhile cotton or rayon, or mystery fiber.. I also see some colored ones from time to time. I have a really pretty red one I am planning to use soon! As for the patterns, sometimes I draw them myself , sometimes I purchase patterns, or get free ones on the internet. Old books with line drawings are a good source. Sometimes I use photos and change them to b&w in photoshop, and play with them to simplify the lines, then trace them to make a pattern, since I am pretty awful at drawing. I usually trace my pattern onto solvy rather than transfer it on to the slip, then embroider away! It's kind of labor intensive/time consuming to do but not super difficult or expensive. Just takes a fair amount of time and patience to get it all done! I definitely recommend hand washing, both because of the dye and the embroidery.
You should definitely give it a try! It doesn't require a huge investment of anything except patience!
