I don't know what size your original image is (presumably you made it big and then sized it down) but what about putting a very fine stroke (say 1 pixel) in black around the lettering?  That way you keep the light coloured text you like but it would be easier to read.

I couldn't read the one with the black on the top very well.
But I can read the one as your icon just fine. And I like it a lot, I would definitely click on it.

You know, I think you were on the right track with the notebook paper background. I liked the tie in, since your website name has paper in it. I think the logo was too "high tech" for the simple notebook paper, but I think it would be cool to experiment around with a journalistic font or something.

Also, you might want to think about doing animated gifs to show off pictures of the products you sell. I did several for my projectwonderful.com ads and they look awesome imo, much better and eye catching than still ads. You can see mine as an example here: http://lovethelimelight.com/banners.html
