Actually I know I want to knit him a scarf (I'm a pretty new knitter) but I can't decide what to knit into the scarf.

I want to try my first pattern on a scarf and don't know which would be better his initials or the initials of the college we went to together.  He's 33.  Or maybe a very simple motif at one end?  So what would a guy like best?

I think his initials would be most appropriate.  I always think it's a bit sad when you see people who are out of school wearing "school fashions"

I agree with initials, like monogram.

Maybe with a simple image? There's pattern charts all over for everything from skull to flames to a silhouette of Tom Waits. It could make it even more personal.
