Well, there's no sign at the store that says, "FREE", but if you go to the back where the guy does cuttings for people, you can say, "gee, this scrap is exactly what i need, how much?" then, hopefully, he'll say, "oh, that's a scrap...the guy already bought the piece of lumber...you can have it..." Make sure you get his name if you get stopped on the way out.  Yes, this is how I do it!
