My friend and I were talking about dip dyeing knitted fabrics. Rather than dyeing a  ball of neutral yarn, you would dye the knitted object in pieces.

Anyone see anything like this before?

yep you can. spin off had an article awhile ago that used this. 

though personally id just dye the yarn in sections (connecting skeins maybe?) and then wrk with it.
