I have a new kitten, and a new town house. We have stairs that are carpeted that he loves to play on and climb up and under, but he needs some sort of lofty area to call his own. A cat condo or whatever you call it. I really don't want to spend more than $100 total on it. I also don't want to buy one of those horrible carpeted badly colored bulky monstrosities that are so expensive and ugly. I don't have wood cutting tools at my disposal, so making one out of plywood or something like that isnt really an option. I would also like it to be fairly easy to take it apart if we move or anything.
I've found some pics of carboard / duct tape towers. But that wouldnt be sturdy enough for the long term, since my kitten is likely to turn into a large tom cat. And then i found this :

It looks like its made out of PVC pipes and joints.
I'm thinking i could make it pretty easily. Probably wrap the bottom legs with jute or rope or whatever so its like a scratch post for him. and use fleece or some sort of sturdy cloth to make a hammock sort of thing on it. I would make it in a shape like this:
-------

with four feet. Do you guys think I should figure out how to attatch it to a piece of plywood as a base or would it be sturdy enough as it is? attatching it to our wall is also an option, since it will be up against the wall.
Have any of you tried to make a structure like this? I've never made any thing this big so any hints would be great!

I think that would be awesome! I would definitely attach it to a plywood base or the wall though. I had a smaller version of that when my cats were kittens and they would fling themselves at it with such force it would slide across the floor.. or in the worst case, fall over.

Or.. you could fill the bottom of the lower PVC pipes with sand or gravel or something heavy.

*Edit* Not sure if you saw this.. but this page has the assembly directions for The Cat Castle.. that might help when making your own :-)

I went through the same dilemma. New house, new kitten, ugly ugly cat condos on the market.

So I made one. Mine is pretty simple in design. It's a box with a door, two (4x4) posts I eventually intend to cover with rope, and a platform on top. I went to Home Depot and they cut all the wood for me! I just had to sand and nail together. I bought carpet scraps from an End of the Roll place and carpeted the top and the inside.

My little guys loves it. And he has something to scratch that isn't' my couch and something to climb that ain't my drapes.

I'll take some pictures and post them soon.

I wish I had seen the design you have a link to though. I seems very nice. I think if you went to the hardware store you could find fittings for the bottom of the pipes that would essantially allow you to give it feet.

I'm excited to see how it turns out!
